WASHINGTON — Rep. Tammy Duckworth, who won a second term in the U.S. House two weeks ago, gave birth Tuesday to a daughter: Abigail O'kalani Bowlsbey.

The news came in a statement Thursday from her office. It said:

I met Tammy back in 2003 where she was a guest speaker at at Emily's Choice luncheon. It was also the first weekend that I met my first 3 DUers - Ramsey, Skinner and EarlG. We all sat together at the same table along with a State senator from Pennsylvania.

Tammy impresses the heck out of me and I'd love to see her run for senate one day!

Tammy got both her legs blown off in Iraq. Even walking is a cumbersome and difficult act for her. An amputated leg (let alone two) wreaks havoc with your circulation. My father-in-law got one of his blown off in World War II at age 18, and was in pain ever since. I can't imagine what childbirth does to someone like that, but Tammy was nothing if not gutsy.

And to think that in her first congressional campaign, which she lost, she lost to a Republican who chided her for being "cut and run" on Iraq, where she served, and he never even wore the uniform. What scum he was!

of one arm. Her crew thought she was dead, but they brought her back anyway, and she recovered.

I heard her speak about six years ago at an Illinois Democratic Women's event. She stayed around and spoke with everyone informally, too. At the time, she was working for Veteran's Affairs. There were state senators and reps there. When she needed to talk to them about veterans' needs, we stepped back and let her do her work. She had quite a bit of information about head injuries to soldiers, and she wanted to make sure the legislators knew what was needed, so they could get more help for those injuries.

She spoke to us about women's leadership rather than politics. Women in leadership roles have to approach things a bit differently than men. That is especially true in a male dominated institution like the military.

Everyone respects Tammy. Congrats to her and her husband.

to Tammy Duckworth and her husband, Bryan!

From your link, LeftInTX.. I did not know this! Mahalo~

"Daniel Akaka, a Democrat, served as a senator from Hawaii until 2013.

Duckworth, 46, who was born in Thailand, spent part of her youth in Hawaii and graduated from McKinley High School in Honolulu. Her mother is Thai and her late father was American."
