TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) Officers shot and killed a suspected gunman after a shooting at Florida State University early Thursday that wounded three others and prompted an alert for students to take shelter, police said.
The shooting happened at a library on campus and officers opened fire after the suspect shot at them, Tallahassee Police spokesman Dave Northway said.
It was not immediately known if the wounded were shot by the suspected gunman.
Northway said authorities did not believe there were any other threats related to the incident. The lockdown was later lifted and the school said on its verified Twitter account that the area was secure.

The Associated Press is reporting the gunman who shot three people at Florida State University before being killed by police was a lawyer who graduated from the school.
The AP said a police official identified the shooter as Myron May, who graduated from Florida State before attending Texas Tech University's law school. The official requested anonymity because he was not authorized to release the name.

(13,141 posts)Every high profile crime by a black man or woman adds
to the so-called justification for that "worst nightmare."
Personally I've always felt safer with a black man than
a white man; and if he was a lawyer with a gun, all the
better. This man was once so beautiful, it's very sad in so
many ways.

(13,141 posts)I hope it was worthwhile. This is a subject -- personal bias --
that I'm always pondering. Wondering why my gut response
is sometimes or often at odds with my beliefs and best
practices. I see the dregs of racism, not hateful, but just
ignorant, in myself, although I grew up with a liberal
and compassionate attitude toward all. I see the dregs
of whatever the opposite of feminism is, in myself, and
it surprises me that those thoughts and feelings, reactions,
responses, happen in me. I don't think I am very different
from others but this is something I've always been acutely
aware of. It is a daily effort to pay attention.

(13,141 posts)My process is more about a generalized sympathy toward
black males and the unfairness of bigotry.. as was said,
for some it is their worst nightmare, black man with a gun.
I think also the more such shooters are white guys, the
sooner people pay attention to the insanity of the gun
laws.

(31,849 posts)But, as a Black man, I freely admit that after reading about ANY crazy crime, I raise words to the Universe that the shooter isn't Black.
My bias? ... When anyone Black does insane, white folks' biases about all Black folk, including myself, are confirmed; when a white person does insane ... it is always an isolated act, by a singular individual.

(13,141 posts)It is a silly debate, as to whether one should feel sad
about the shooter, or only the victims. No matter the
shooter's history, illness, story of becoming lost and
broken: hate the shooter, do not mourn him?
As I see it, the almighty Sun shines equally on everyone.
Mother Earth will grow apples for anybody who knows
how to grow apples. Nobody measures our goodness,
except ourselves. The sun shines impartially, even on
the worst of the worst of us. Doesn't care.
Compassion also is impartial. It leaves no room for hating.
Gibran's writing on crime and punishment is powerful;
we are all so connected. Nobody is all guilty, nobody is
all innocent. Everyone hungry for love, and hope. Some
of us, losing our minds, making deadly choices.

Mental illness is most certainly color blind - witness reports of this gunman hearing 'voices' coming out of the walls and the like.ntal The same folks giving you shit for feeling 'sad' for this shooter would, I dare say, not show the same vitriol were this shooter white.
Let me say it again: mental illness is colorblind!

Doug Stanglin and Michael Winter, USA TODAY 5:11 p.m. EST November 20, 2014
Myron May, identified as the shooter at Florida State University, was an FSU alumnus who had recently quit as a prosecutor in New Mexico, was having financial troubles and believed the government was spying on him, authorities said Thursday.
The 31-year-old native of Dayton, Ohio, who grew up in the Florida Panhandle, was shot and killed by police about 12:30 a.m. after he wounded three people at an FSU library.
"Mr. May was in a state of crisis ... struggling either psychologically or emotionally,"Police Chief Michael DeLeo told reporters.
A 2005 FSU grad, May had recently moved back to the Tallahassee area after leaving his job with the Las Cruces, N.M., district attorney's office in October.
Last month, a former girlfriend filed a harassment complaint alleging May told her police were bugging his home and car. She also said May had developed a "severe mental disorder" and was taking medication, according to a police report obtained by the Associated Press.

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- - Newly released documents from the Las Cruces Police Department in New Mexico paint a disturbing picture of the mental status of Myron May, the man investigators said opened fire inside a Florida State University campus library.
May, who used to live in New Mexico, reportedly told police in one incident that he thought he was being watched inside his home and that he could hear voices through his walls.
In another incident, May showed up to the home of his ex-girlfriend, gave her a piece of his car and told her it was the camera that has been watching him.
