Jerusalem (CNN) -- At least nine people were wounded when two knife- and axe-wielding men broke into a synagogue in Jerusalem, an emergency response worker said Tuesday on Israeli Government Radio.

Five people were critically wounded and four others were hurt after the two men, identified as Palestinians, broke into the building in the Har Nof area of the city in what Israel Defense Forces spokesman Peter Lerner called a "terror attack."

The two Palestinians were shot and killed by police at the scene, government radio announced.

At least four Israelis have been killed and seven injured in what police say was a "terrorist attack" at a Jerusalem synagogue.

Two men armed with axes and knives carried out the attack in the Har Nof neighbourhood.

Police say they shot both the attackers dead inside the synagogue.
