German labor chief: VW must halt anti-union group
Source: AP-seattlepi
By ERIK SCHELZIG,
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) The head of the German union representing automotive workers is speaking out against Volkswagen working with anti-labor groups at its plant in Tennessee.
In a statement issued Friday in Frankfurt, Germany, IG Metall President Detlef Wetzel called on Volkswagen to "show its true colors" in officially recognizing the United Auto Workers union as its bargaining partner at the Chattanooga factory once the union proves it has signed up a majority of workers there.
"It is our objective to guarantee also under the politically difficult circumstances in the United States that labor union rights are respected and codetermination in the plant is possible," Wetzel said.
Under German law, worker representatives hold half the seats on the board of Wolfsburg, Germany-based Volkswagen, which lends added weight to Wetzel's position. It also appears to reflect some concern that a new company policy released this week could serve to undermine efforts by its U.S. ally, the United Auto Workers, to organize its first foreign automaker in the South.

(41,145 posts)worker rights were so important very soon; why people fought and persisted for decades to achieve what is disappearing now. It's awful how they've been deceived, conned. Some don't know what a union is through no fault of their own. All that's been hacked away since Dutch and Uncle Miltie Friedman with some help.
Ludlow, that's quite a heritage. I remember the union wars, Mother Jones, miners in coal country WV.

(41,145 posts)I'm from SW WVa close to OH-KY. Yes coming from that region is special, despite the hassling from fools. My education in public schools was excellent, terrific brainy teachers, disciplined too. That was a great foundation. What's happened to the area breaks my heart, & ticks me off a lot. So rich in natural and human resources as JFK said. Nice to meet you, see you around. Do you follow the A. group link on DU? Hope so.

Went to Columbus, Cincinatti as kids. S.ville not far from Morgantown, was there one term. *Did you know there's an A. Group on DU? Home Page at bottom under 'Places' then 'US'. The dedicated founder posts some good articles. Ancestors from outside Philly, close friends from Pgh. Nice too meet you. See you soon.

(8,445 posts)It would also be great if American unions demanded codetermination -- representation on the comanies' board of directors. Its a long, boring word but critically important to balancing the priorities of the companies.

The sad part is how many workers in the South are brainwashed.
Even sadder that the one free market small government alternative to inequality is rejected by the right.

(41,145 posts)a strong union presence in Germany b/c of earlier inflation/depression that fueled instability, Wars. Need to check out whether that's correct, sounds right. Too bad our leaders don't see things that way...
Wonder if we could ask Germany for some help? You know, like a reverse Plan for the US? Our military was there many years to protect against USSR. I'm not too proud, things are bad here. What irony.
Would they consider adopting us maybe? I mean if we got in really good shape, and had the right attitude? (And we're up to date on shots). I have German ancestors from PA..wishful.
