Elizabeth Warren to oppose (Obama Pick) Antonio Weiss as Treasury undersecretary

Source: Politico

Sen. Elizabeth Warren plans to oppose President Barack Obama’s nomination of Antonio Weiss, a Wall Street investment banker, to be Treasury Undersecretary for Domestic Finance, another sharp-elbowed move by the progressive movement’s most prominent leader.

Weiss, head of global investment banking at Lazard, is widely respected on Wall Street. But he advised on Burger King’s acquisition of Canadian doughnut chain Tim Horton’s, a so-called “tax inversion deal.” Defenders say the deals are commonplace across Wall Street and Weiss did not advise on the tax portion. Such arguments have not swayed the Massachusetts Democratic senator, a persistent Wall Street critic who appears headed to a leadership role in the next Congress.
Story Continued Below

A Warren adviser told POLITICO: “She is a no on Antonio Weiss. She was a Treasury official herself, she cares a lot about who is in the domestic finance role. It oversees Dodd-Frank implementation and other core economic policy-making.”
(Also on POLITICO: Big donors urge Warren to run)

The adviser added that Warren “agrees with Senator Grassley that his past work with corporate inversions is a major issue, and she’s had growing concerns with the Administration being loaded with so many appointees from Wall Street rather than more people who would bring different perspectives.”

Net Neutrality, Immigration, Keystone Pipeline, now he's schmoozing with Wall St. again.

Until they're willing to take on Wall St. and banks too big to fail, it's all a shell game.

So Obama comes out for net neutrality and the FCC chair (Wheeler?) Immediately makes public comments to the contrary.

Harry Reid decides that bringing the Keystone pipeline for an immediate vote on the laughable premise that a yes vote from Mary Landrieu could clinch her runoff victory. Obama suddenly waxes eloquent on all the reasons why the pipeline should not be built as soon as it looks like there could be a veto proof majority for it.

Etc, etc, etc.

Given the VERY evident political repercussions of these base-placating positions, I seriously doubt that the president didn't even have a heads up from Reid or Wheeler in advance. It all feels very choreographed.

And now this extremely pro Banksters nominee....

Hello? Does this smell fishy to anyone else?

I call it the DiFi Technique in honor of my DINO Senator Feinstein. You do little or nothing to support something (sometimes you even undermine it) and then at the last minute you come out in favor of it when its defeat is almost certain.

It's a cynical ploy that reassures members of your base who haven't been paying attention.

Good for Senator Warren.

Way too many Wall Streeters have had a turn with the Obama administration. It has been standard practice for frighteningly long, and WS no doubt has come to count on having no one with any actual teeth or combativeness in these roles and a full-on revolving door between the two theaters.

It's time it stopped, and even baby steps like this may help.
