Russian capital Moscow shrouded in noxious gas
Source: BBC
Residents of parts of the Russian capital Moscow have been urged by the emergencies ministry to stay indoors because of a noxious gas that is spreading through the city.
The source of the gas is unclear - no accidents have been reported at any of Moscow's chemical factories.
Media reports said that the gas was hydrogen sulphide, which can be highly toxic and smells like rotten eggs.
It has been smelt in central, eastern and south-eastern parts of the city.

The description of the smell reminds me of how the steel mills smelled in the old days. Maybe some plant lost its baghouse (if such anti-pollution equipment is used in Russia).

(6,785 posts)That awful smell when you pass one that clings to the inside of your car for the next thirty minutes is H2S and a few other chemicals.
FWIW: The stuff puts off an ungodly reek even in tiny amounts. It's when you know it's there and you can't smell it at all that you're screwed.

Sometimes, a little. I appreciate it when I can.
Just wondering. But when I could smell things, we went on a family trip to Washington, and passed a paper mill town at one point. The Hawaiian word is, hauna. Really stink!
