Republican favorite Mike Rounds has won the U.S. Senate race to replace retiring South Dakota Democrat Tim Johnson, according to projections from the Associated Press.
The former governor beat out Democrat Rick Weiland and independent candidates Larry Pressler and Gordon Howie.
The Associated Press projection is based on exit polls.
With 323 of 714 precincts reporting at 9:30 p.m., Rounds had 51.5 percent of the vote, followed by Weiland at 28.4 percent, Pressler at 17.3 percent and Howie at 2.9 percent.
