Small fire damages historic clipper Cutty Sark

LONDON (AP) — London firefighters have extinguished a small blaze on the 19th-century sailing ship Cutty Sark, a tourist attraction that was restored after a major fire in 2007.

London Fire Brigade said four engines and 21 firefighters were called to the fire Sunday morning, and that "a small part of the ship" was damaged.

One of the fastest ships of its day, the Cutty Sark was launched in 1869 and was designed to carry tea from the far east back to Britain.

5. I built two, one was for a history class. It was destroyed in the classroom by a burglar.

Somebody broke in, took a few items and thrashed a few others.

My 36" long model, mounted on a nice walnut stand (thanks, mom!) had been turned upside down and crushed to the floor apparently.

Ah well.

That looks like a significant fire, but small given the scale of the ship.

I had long ago in grade school. Most kids bought the Revell plastic model, I chose to build from scratch. Mine had balsa wood hull, toothpick oars, tiny painted shields along the gunnels, etc. The teacher gave me a lower grade saying it wasn't as detailed as the other kids (kit) ones (!). I remember being somewhat disenchanted with that teacher from then on. And one day the display area got wacked by some kid, and mine ship was the only casualty. Coincidence? I think not.

8. Oh, that sucks! Nothing more difficult than from scratch. Admittedly, mine was a Revelle.

But even that kit took work. I remember it had metal anchor chain and one had to run all the rigging through blocks, it wasn't easy!

But from scratch, wow.

In my case I recall being told that some equipment, like the stereo and other things, were taken.

It was pre VCR and pre computer, but there were still things to steal.

I have build one of them - it was, to put it midly a rather testing job to make it possible - Even if also very inter sting and fun to build - specially when you managed to se how it was build - and it started to be anything else than just parts....
