NYPD cop allegedly took $1,300 in cash from Brooklyn construction worker’s pocket during stop-and-fr

Source: New York Daily News

The Brooklyn District Attorney’s office is investigating allegations that an NYPD cop wrongfully removed more than $1,000 from a man during a stop-and-frisk then pepper sprayed two people he did not arrest, the Daily News has learned.

The encounter was captured on a cell phone video, which has been turned over to prosecutors and the NYPD Internal Affairs Bureau, said lawyer Robert Marinelli.

“One of the most disturbing things about the video is the other cops standing around watching and doing nothing to stop the wrongdoing,” Marinelli said Wednesday.

Marinelli represents siblings who were pepper sprayed — Lamard Joye who claims the cop took $1,300 from his pocket, which has still not been accounted, and his sister Lateefah Joye, a professional basketball player in Europe, who tried to get the cop’s badge number.

That's all they do now. They just steal people's money. I've never seen them protect anyone in my entire life but I've seen them threaten and assault hundreds of people in that time. They use the fraudulent drug war to do all of it. It's disgusting.

. . . but have spent my entire adult life since college in NYC (I am no 53, so about 31 years). People often say how rude New Yorkers are. But in my experience, New Yorkers aren't rude so much as rushed and harried. But if you can get their (our) attention and make them (us) understand that you really are in need of some kind of help or assistance, then yes, they (we) actually are very kind and friendly!

I would add that it is in small, rural towns where I find people are most suspicious of 'outsiders,' or of people whose lives differ in some way from those they encounter in their tiny, restricted worlds!

With the combination of video and publicity this cop will likely fry. Good argument here for mandatory police cameras so fewer of these scum can slip through the cracks.

This is why I've fucking had it with people who incessantly claim that the problem with policing is just down to a few bad apples. The problem with policing in the US is the culture. Plenty of cops will keep silent to protect criminals and bigots in their ranks.

It kind of reminds me of school. When someone was being a bully, the rest of us usually didn't do anything but mind our own business. In retrospect, I regret being one of the silent ones, but the damage has been done. I can only make myself do the right thing in the future when I see such wrongs.

Hoping for change- and yes if the police have to wear cameras, it could happen.

of all these murderers and thieves who hide behind their badges and the 'blue wall of silence'. Really getting sickening and to the point that I really don't care about their fate anymore. Just don't care. Just took the man's hard earned money, just robbed him because A black with that much money just has to have done or is doing something wrong. Disgusting behavior to have to witness. The upshot is, this thief will probably get away with this crime, again. Because of the RW mentality that is being agitated by the hatemongers, this fucking country is in sad, dangerous shape. People are not going to keep putting up with this shit.
