Justice Kennedy blocks gay marriage ruling for Idaho, Nevada

Source: USATODAY

WASHINGTON (AP) — Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy on Wednesday temporarily blocked an appeals court ruling that declared gay marriage legal in Idaho and Nevada.

Kennedy's order came a little more than an hour after Idaho filed an emergency request for an immediate stay and about 10 minutes before the state said that state and county officials would otherwise have been required to begin issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples.

Generally stays, on this subject at least, are because local officials claim that they aren't ready to issue "that many" licenses.

named Fruitland, make of that what you will.

Please folks, I'm just making a joke, I have full confidence that Justice Kennedy did this for the right reasons, and I truly hope to see fundy heads (especially Mormon ones) explode in Idaho when equal marriage is finally (and quickly) established there.

Something that would prevent a less favorable justice getting a hold of it and deciding to do worse. I believe either Kagen or Sotomayor did something similar a few weeks back.

AFAIK, Kennedy is pro-LGBT.

If he is one of the Kennedys, I would would hope that he intends to uphold the family commitment to civil rights.

on gay marriage that would sort of force the SCOTUS to take this issue up.
After their pass on any marriage equality suits on Monday, it looked like there would be no cases until there was a conflict in rulings. Enter Kennedy. Must be nice to be so powerful.

There are people here -- not saying who they are -- that don't know their asshole from a hole in the ground!
Just like in real life, some people say silly things, not realizing just how far out in to the universe anyone would have to be located in order to believe it to be true.

Many just can't bear the thought of some being happy ... have to punish and persecute them. And for what F'en reason. It is stupid beyond ones imagination. And for religion, some are disciples from hell wearing sheep's clothing! They wear religion as a veil so they can practice discrimination, persecution and hatefulness. It makes them feel good, we see it all of the time.

http://www.ktvn.com/story/26738189/supreme-court-justice-clears-same-sex-marriage-for-nevada-idaho-on-hold

Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy has allowed same-sex marriage to begin in Nevada, clarifying that an earlier order blocking gay unions applies only to Idaho.

Kennedy said in a brief order issued Wednesday afternoon that he is temporarily putting on hold same-sex marriage in Idaho, where state officials have asked for the delay. Nevada officials did not make a similar request.

The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco declared gay marriage legal in Idaho and Nevada on Tuesday. A day earlier, the Supreme Court let similar rulings from three other appeals courts become final and effectively raised to 30 the number of states where same-sex couples can marry, or soon will be able to do so.
