Mike Honda, Ro Khanna spar in only 17th Congressional District debate

Source: San Jose Mercury News

SAN JOSE -- Rep. Mike Honda and his Democratic challenger, Ro Khanna, sparred in their first and only debate Monday night on issues ranging from immigration reform to political ethics. But neither landed a knockout punch.

The 75-minute debate in the NBC Bay Area studios was the only opportunity that 17th Congressional District voters will have to see Honda, D-San Jose, side-by-side with his young upstart rival in the nationally watched contest.

The 73-year-old Honda, seeking his eighth term, came to the debate hoping to tout his record. And Khanna, 38, came to call it into question and argue that Honda was out of ideas.

But Honda quipped: "I'm not burnt out; I've got a lot of gas in this tank -- and I'm not even a hybrid." And he added that he still has "a very deep-seated desire to make sure this country does the right thing" -- something he said was instilled in him as a child consigned to a Japanese-American internment camp.
