Braley and Ernst go on attack in lively first U.S. Senate debate

Democrat Bruce Braley repeatedly slammed GOP rival Joni Ernst for being associated with the Koch Brothers and an obstructionist tea party agenda in their first debate of the U.S. Senate race, even as he called himself "a bridge builder, not a bridge burner."

"Senator Ernst would've voted to shut down the federal government with Ted Cruz. She's called President Obama a dictator and thinks impeachment should be on the table," Braley said.

Ernst calmly fired back: "Congressman, you threatened to sue a neighbor over chickens that came onto their property. You're talking about bipartisanship, how do we expect as Iowans to believe that you will work across the aisle when you can't walk across your yard?"

It was a lively debate, marked by biting attacks and comebacks - especially in the final few minutes. There were heated exchanges on abortion, contraceptives, climate change and environmental regulations.

Mr Braley went easy on Joni for reasons unknown to me and many other. Its a sad state of affair to let Joni off the hook with her radical rightwing agenda. Braley should be all over her like a cheap suit but didn't follow through. Heartbreaking.
