Apple pulls iOS 8.0.1 after users report major problems with update
Source: The Verge
One week after the launch of iOS 8, Apple released its first update for the new OS iOS 8.0.1 on Wednesday afternoon. It was meant to fix a slew of bugs, but that's not what happened. Immediately after the update hit, reports began flooding in that iOS 8.0.1 was breaking cellular reception and other features like Touch ID. Apple eventually removed the faulty update, but not before an untold number of users were able to install it. ""We have received reports of an issue with the iOS 8.0.1 update," a spokesperson told The Verge. "We are actively investigating these reports and will provide information as quickly as we can. In the meantime we have pulled back the iOS 8.0.1 update."
Those affected report that "no service" is displayed after iOS 8.0.1 has been installed, and toggling airplane mode or powering the phone off and on again doesn't seem to restore cellular reception. Both of Apple's latest iPhones seem vulnerable to the massive problem, though older models seem to handle the update just fine.
If you've fallen victim to these issues and until Apple comes up with its own fix the best "solution" seems to be downgrading back to the original version of iOS 8 released a week ago. We'll have a step-by-step guide on how to do just that for you very soon.
According to Apple's release notes, iOS 8.0.1 was intended to fix numerous problems, including an issue that held back HealthKit apps last week. iOS 8.0.1 also patches up issues with third-party keyboards, a bug that prevented some apps from getting at the photo library, reliability around Apple's Reachability feature, and more. The full changelog follows below. To install the update on your iPhone or iPad, just head into settings. This one shouldn't require as much space as the original iOS 8 release.

Now I have a few new apps I didn't ask for.

(92,204 posts)To prevent automatic downloads:
1. Go to Settings
2. Itunes & App Store
3. Insure that updates are turned off
If you already started to download it, after the download is complete you will be asked if you want to install, just select later, and wait until a stable version comes out.
Always a good idea to backup your data before updating the OS. If the update messes things up you can always do a restore

(19,564 posts)I'm in no hurry to update unless it's a critical bug fix that needs to be installed ASAP. Since those make the news you know when you need to allow a download and when it's alright to just wait until all the kinks are worked out.
No cell service on the new iPhone 6 models is going to tick off some customers pretty fast. Heads will roll over this one.

Sounds like Apple is reeling after Steve Jobs left, and it isn't a good look with:
bending iPhones
cracking screens
problems with their camera
software updates that knock the phone out
wifi functionality
touchscreen issues
bluetooth car functionality
just to name a few.
A friend's family just bought 3, one is already cracked, the other wouldn't function properly so he spent all weekend trying re-re-reinstall software over and over to fix it, literally a lost weekend of tech-on-the-phone help, in-store visits, and now a replacement coming by mail he had to pay another $900+ in advance to replace the non-functioning one to swap out as the stores couldn't do it, etc etc

(13,297 posts)will probably wait until they send a few generations out before buying it this time around. Which means the style is already going to be outdated by the time they get it out to market.
The bending iPhones is really going to get worse over the next months as people actually start to use their phones... I mean it has only been a week or so since they began actually arriving! I read that it isn't just the larger one either, which means that this is not going to simply go away. Steve Jobs would be slamming doors from one end of the building to the other I'm guessing if he were around while this was going on.

(13,297 posts)they didn't use high-strength aircraft aluminum ie. 7075 aluminium alloy, and instead cheaped out on the materials. I hope Apple does some research on what was actually manufactured, this literally could be a factory defect. I know high-strength aircraft aluminum can undergo a lot of pressure.

(45,358 posts)It's a structural flaw that should have never passed the first round of QA. It probably didn't.
Apple obviously knew. Ouch.

I'm wondering if this could end up being such a huge problem for Apple that they are going to have to do a massive recall. The article says a plate separates the screen from the battery, but not sure how that would stop a battery from bending along with the phone.

(13,297 posts)Vorrath has a notorious temper.
...Vorrath was once so furious at her colleagues that she slammed the door to her office so hard its handle broke. Fellow Apple executive Scott Forstall had to use a bat to break her out of her office.
The last time Vorrath was in hot water with her bosses was when Apple launched a very buggy Maps application back in 2012. After that fiasco, Vorrath's own boss, Forstall, left the company.

(4,220 posts)it had no case on it but it felt a little big for one handed use, like slippery. Maybe with a case it won't but... I normally put it in my front pockets of my jeans, might have to lose some weight to fit the 6 in there. Good reason to diet though...
And this was the 6 not the 6 Plus...

(18,634 posts)So often they have problems that it's not worth it.
If you remember the first iPhone had a plastic screen that would get scratched when it was kept in your pocket. That's why they switched to glass screens.
I'll wait on the Apple Watch too for the same reason.
