Gloria Allred: Roger Goodell Didn’t Investigate Brandon Marshall Fully For Domestic Abuse

Source: Sports Grid.com

Gloria Allred, the civil rights lawyer who often becomes as much a part of the cases she handles as the cases themselves, is in Atlanta today along with, according to an email she sent out, “two individuals who allege that they or a family member were victims of violence and abuse by an NFL player.” She said those two would “discuss how the NFL and Commissioner Goodell failed them.”

The presser was regarding Brandon Marshall when he was with the Broncos. This isn’t new — Marshall’s history of violence is documented, but Allred’s client is claiming that the NFL did not investigate Marshall’s abuse of Rasheedah Watley fully, and ended up reducing his three-game suspension to one game.

Both Watley’s friend Kristeena Spivey — who claims she was also a victim of Marshall — and her father Clarence Watley are with Allred at the presser. Spivey cited several examples of Marshall’s violence towards Watley and herself, and says she tried to contact Roger Goodell about it but he never responded. Clarence Watley says he was also ignored by the league and calls for Goodell’s resignation.

You can watch the press conference below. If you only listen to one part, skip ahead to 1:15:00, when Clarence Watley rips into the NFL’s handling of the allegations, the culture of domestic violence and the treatment of women in general — it’s haunting:

She usually makes over the top assertions that can backfire when shown to be demonstrably hyperbolic.
Oh go ahead and flame me and accuse me of misogyny for making an observation.

and The Broncos and Goodell did nothing.

When the 1% ignore you, you call Gloria Allred.

“The Denver Broncos had knowledge of Brandon Marshall’s abusive behavior toward our daughter for over 2 1/2 years. In fact, I was contacted by the staff of the Denver Broncos (during Marshall’s tenure there) about an abusive incident by Brandon Marshall against our daughter Rasheedah, an incident that I had no knowledge of. I was asked by this staff member to give Mr. Marshall another chance, that he would be able to change. He did change; he became more abusive. I told commissioner Goodell that I had been in contact with the Brhttp://chicago.cbslocal.com/2014/09/17/lawyer-roger-goodell-ignored-victim-who-accused-brandon-marshall-of-domestic-violence/oncos staff throughout this whole nasty affair in hopes that the Broncos would step in and help our daughter in this situation.

...follow Marshall's lead. He was diagnosed with BPD and has made huge progress in his own life as well as reaching out to others. It's a life-long battle, as many here know. Does his diagnosis excuse his behavior? No. But, I'm giving him credit for not just going public with his mental illness, but keeping it public (even after being fined by the NFL for wearing bright green shoes to show his support for mental health research...not for his prior domestic violence charges...yeah.).

I sincerely hope that Rice and Peterson both seek professional counseling beyond what may be required by the courts. Maybe Brandon could give them a business card.

On another note, I hope that all the victims of abuse/neglect can find what will heal them. It is never easy. Ever.
