WEED, Calif. (AP) Dan Linville and his son were sitting in their living room when they smelled smoke. When they looked outside, they saw a black cloud coming over the hills.
Ten minutes later, a wildfire driven by fierce winds raced through their neighborhood, missing them by three houses and torching a roof across the street.
Officials said the fast-moving fire caught residents in the small town of Weed near the Oregon border off guard and damaged or destroyed 100 homes and a church in this tiny town. At least 1,500 people were forced to flee.
It was among nearly a dozen wildfires burning in California that have been exacerbated by the state's third straight year of drought. The tinder-dry conditions have increased the fire danger around the state significantly and sent firefighters scrambling seemingly nonstop from blaze to blaze.

(29,718 posts)I've seen walls of fire over the next ridge, but to have it 3 houses away must have been a come to jesus moment.

(1,805 posts)and it was VERY scary. Of course, my stubborn husband said he wasn't going anywhere until he finished his dinner (spaghetti as I recall). A good friend (and former boss) lost his house, didn't even have time to take family mementos. Super sad. But at least he and his wife were fine - things are just things.

Weed High School and Weed Elementary School are closed today, school district officials said.
A Siskiyou County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman said the fire is nearly contained but hot spots continue to burn.
She also advised people to stay out of Weed due to emergency personnel fighting the fire.

(1,805 posts)on one of our many road trips north, I stopped to take a picture of the city sign. Childish I know, but so what. Wonder what I did with that pic? Nope, it wasn't on a cell.
Hope they get this thing under control quickly. We are really screwed in California. Lake Cachuma, one of the cool lakes on the way to Morro Bay (and other places) is dry as can be. We used to take that back route just to see the lake - plus there is a great tavern/restaurant nearby.
