Trayvon Martin's Girlfriend Interviewed By Prosecutors

Trayvon Martin's girlfriend has been formally interviewed by prosecutors in connection with the unarmed 17-year-old's death after neighborhood watch captain, George Zimmerman shot and killed him, RadarOnline.com is exclusively reporting.
As previously reported, Martin was killed by Zimmerman, who claimed self defense, as he was walking through a gated community, carrying candy and iced tea.
Martin's girlfriend, who is a minor so RadarOnline.com won't be disclosing her identity, was interviewed at an undisclosed location for more than two and a half hours.
"Trayvon's girlfriend was interviewed by the two district attorneys that Special Prosecutor Angela Corey appointed to the case," a source tells RadarOnline.com. "She was interviewed last week and her mother was present throughout. She was very forthcoming and had pertinent information to the investigation because she was the last person that talked to Trayvon before George Zimmerman shot and killed him. It was extremely emotional for her and her mother wanted to make sure it wasn't too much for her. She would be a very compelling witness for the state of Florida if criminal charges are filed against George Zimmmerman."

I guess this begs the question: Why was she never initially interviewed by the Sanford police?
Did they even bother to check the phone records? The phone was on Trayvon as he was gunned down. It never occurred to them that a phone might actually lead to additional evidence and potential witnesses being uncovered? Also, how come Norm Wolfinger, the first State Atty on the case, never bothered to interview her either?
These are questions the FBI needs to be asking.

I'd also like to hear if he and his police chauffeur had a conversation en route to the station house.

As I'm sure you suspect, I bet they very well thought that the phone call would lead to additional evidence, just not the kind of evidence they wanted / needed, which was why it was ignored.

(238 posts)Unless all of the information in the media -- including the 911 calls -- is entirely made up, there should be an arrest. Zimmerman admitted on the phone to following an unarmed teenager who was breaking no laws. And he admitted to shooting him dead within minutes of that call. Whatever happened in between should be weighed by a judge and jury, not dismissed by the police or prosecutors.

I don't know. I wasn't there. But this whole thing stinks. Especially if Zimmerman's family was so immediately involved.

(12,482 posts)he apparently influenced this investigation to the point the lead investigator was overridden in his opinion that manslaughter charges should be filed._

(34,136 posts)And the police have not said they have it. Trayvon's father got the phone log from online records and that is how he found out about the girlfriend's calls.
I've read that the girl's family tried to contact the Sanford PD the day after her call was broken off and the SPD never called her back. With one thing and another, by the time the SPD realized they really should talk to her, her family refused to allow the SPD permission. They let her talk to Trayvon's parents' attorney and promised that she would talk to the Grand Jury and the Special Prosecutor.
What is weird is that according to the phone logs at least one call from Trayvon's phone was made to 911 - on March 2, days after he was killed. Immediately after calls from the Sanford Police Department were made to Trayvon's phone. Did the police have the phone and were trying to get the number? Did someone else find the phone and made the call to 911? The SPD has not made any statement about the phone.

(1,437 posts)have given us a distorted view of the capabilities of cops. I think there are some really great investigators working out there today, but most cops are probably bumbling or overworked idiots who take the easiest possible route, which, in this case, was to call it self-defense and go home.
Most crimes go unsolved.

(535 posts)It's hard to know where to begin.
But police investigators telling Trayvon's family that the shooter had a "squeaky clean record"...tells me that police felt they were under some pressure to NOT go far in investigating the circumstances of the shooting. They were lying to the parents of the victim. That's about as low as police can go, in my mind.
The civil rights division of the U.S. DOJ could have a field day with this case, there are so many racially tied issues here.
I'm hoping that, if Florida courts let Zimmerman off, the feds will step in and charge him with a federal civil rights crime, AND charge some in the police dept. too.
