1010/WGUN-AM becomes progressive talk

Source: Atlanta Journal-Constitution

1010/WGUN-AM has dropped its oldies/standards format in favor of progressive talk, picking up shows by Warren Ballentine (10 a.m. to 1 p.m.), Ed Schultz (1 p.m. to 3 p.m..), Randi Rhodes (3 p.m. to 6 p.m.), Thom Hartmann (6 p.m. to 9 p.m.) and Atlanta’s own Mike Malloy (9 p.m. to midnight).

The release provides no information about mornings and I haven’t been able to reach Rivers Radio GM Kevin Hemmings.

“For the first time in a very long while, the listeners of Atlanta now have a diverse choice of viewpoints and opinions,” Hemmings said in a press release.

6. For 50 kW, WGUN has a pretty weak signal

WGUN is non-directional, 3 patterns.

Compare with the signal strength of the non-directional, 1 pattern right wing station in Atlanta, WSB:

Or Seattle's KOMO 1000

Otherwise, that's great news for the Atlanta area!

7. where do you get those signal patterns? i'll bet you could do some predictable polling if correlated

with RW radio overlapping.

Also I've noticed that with the exceptions of KKZN 760 in Denver, KPOJ 620 Portland, and KPTK 1090 Seattle, progressive station signals have limited distances compared with the conservative stations. Even at 50 kW.

Go to that website and look up:
- For Los Angeles, KTLK (LW) vs. KFI (RW) (both are 50k, but KFI can be heard better in the more distant places like Santa Barbara and Riverside than KTLK)
- San Francisco has two 5 kW talkers: KSFO (RW) and KNEW (LW). Guess which station still comes in clear in Santa Cruz or Sacramento?
- Once you get to the suburbs of northern New Jersey, you can still hear conservative noise on WABC or WOR (both 50 kW) but the 25 kW progressive WWRL disappears.

10. thanks. i wonder if they have a way to rig the game. at times over the years it sounded like when

a liberal would call in all of a sudden some other station would buzz in temporarily. i wonder if they use boosters or have ways of suppressing.

Almost every afternoon when MSNBC starts airing their progressive shows (Shultz, Maddow, etc.) my Mediacom cable starts getting glitchy and twitchy. Coincidence? Conspiracy?

12. I have to agree, that isn't the worst signal they could be on.

Maybe not the best, but it looks like a good start.

(Any Atlantans care to comment on that station's signal?)

so its signal gets so weak Mike Malloy can't be heard very much outside metro ATL.

17. I couldn't even hear them this morning

I tried listening this morning and there was nothing but static so I was wondering if they had to drop their power between sunset and sunrise, apparently that's the case. I'm about midway between the "local" and "distant" lines on the map. Maybe at least I can hear them driving home this afternoon.
