David Cameron has resumed his holiday in Cornwall after returning to Downing Street on Wednesday to chair a meeting of the governments Cobra committee in response to the beheading of the US journalist James Foley, apparently by a UK citizen.
Downing Street said the prime minister would remain in touch with officials and would continue to make calls to world leaders as British intelligence officials seek to identify the Islamic State fighter who killed the journalist.
Sources have told the Guardian that the English-speaking jihadist, who spoke with a London accent and was known as John, is believed to be the leader of a group of British fighters who have been holding foreign hostages in the Syrian city of Raqqa, a stronghold of Islamic State (Isis) rebels.
Government sources suggested after the Cobra meeting that the prime minister, who watched the video of the beheading, did not see a need for any changes in the law. But there will be a strong focus on up to 250 UK citizens who are believed to have returned from Syria after fighting for Isis. It is estimated that between 400-500 British fighters remain in Syria and Iraq.

(9,118 posts)The ISIS thug could very well be a British national. Britain does have a proportionately-large South Asian population, and I could well believe that some would choose to go in for jihad and adventure.
This is not to excuse the punk(s) who did the killing. Murder is murder, and I see no reason why progressives should applaud a band of bigoted sectarian religious thugs with penchants for ethnic and religious pogroms as well as the usual misogynistic brutalities the way they would genuine national liberation movements.
I hope some quiet, careful individuals living in some ISIS-controlled Hell on Earth are quietly, unobtrusively collecting the forensic evidence that could put these criminals behind bars for the rest of their lives the next time they come home from their brutal handiwork to take tea and crumpets in a civilized country.

(63,912 posts)But should we kill him outright or extradite him to Britain for a trial? If he's a British citizen, he should go back there for trial. Of course, we could assist in getting the SOB and he might get killed in the attempted capture. But he might give up valuable information if taken alive...

A Syrian source close to the Islamic State told Reuters that the militants had been tipped off to the planned operation when Americans were seen asking about the hostages in the Turkish city of Antakya, about 12 miles (20 km) from the Syrian border.
The Americans were looking for their hostages and desperately looking for any information, said this person, who spoke to Reuters on the condition of anonymity.
They met people in Antakya and asked questions. Afterwards, the operation became expected. The (Islamic) State anticipated the operation and took precautions. They expected it and that is why they have probably changed the location of the hostages.
