New Secretary of Veterans Affairs visits VA Palo Alto Health Care System

Source: Palo Alto Daily News

During his first visit Wednesday to the VA Palo Alto Health Care System, newly appointed Secretary of Veterans Affairs Robert McDonald held the facility up as an example to be emulated.

"Palo Alto VA medical center is one of the crown jewels of our healthcare system," he told reporters at a briefing. "Every day, great care is delivered to veterans in every healthcare facility nationwide, but it's especially evident here in Palo Alto and that's why I'm here today."

McDonald, who has been touring Veterans Affairs facilities since his unanimous confirmation last month, is in the midst of overhauling a federal agency scandalized by reports of veterans dying while waiting for care and workers falsifying records to cover up the delays.

The former Army officer and Procter & Gamble CEO acknowledged that the problems won't be solved overnight.

The VA wants to shut this hospital down and require vets to drive 60 miles north to a hospital they want to build in Rapid City.
It has been proven much cheaper to renovate this historical facility than build a new one.

The Hot Springs hospital draws vets from western Nebraska and eastern Wyoming. Their already driving 200+ miles just to Hot Springs.

The VA has slowly been gutting and removing services from here. No one can say why. This hospital treats more patients than the Sturgis hospital.

We will see how this idiotic fight ends.
