Police: 2 California boys planned school shooting
| August 18, 2014 | Updated: August 18, 2014 9:40pm

SOUTH PASADENA, Calif. (AP) — Two teenage boys were arrested Monday after making specific plans to kill three staffers then gun down as many students as possible at their Southern California high school, police said.

The boys, who did not yet have weapons but were trying to get them, had been under constant surveillance since the school district informed police of their plans last Thursday, South Pasadena police Sgt. Brian Solinsky said.

He would not elaborate on the plans or what form they took, but Solinsky said they were "very specific" and included named targets.

"This is a prime example of school officials recognizing suspicious behavior," Solinsky said in a statement. "It was this information that helped prevent a horrific tragedy."

Police found evidence that the boys were researching rifles, submachine guns, bombs and other explosives, especially propane, police said.

4. Teenage "boys were researching rifles, submachine guns, bombs and other explosives" ???

I hope the Police have more evidence then the boys went on the net and looked at "rifles, submachine guns, bombs and other explosives, especially propane". Many, if not most, teenage boys do that. Such teenage boys then do nothing more and they get on with their lives.

Hopefully the police have found something the boys have made, i.e. something REAL, not just "Plans" with items they did not and could not get. Whatever it is hopefully it is not something that is normally found in a home, for example not just having a propane cylinder in their home (Through a propane cylinder when their parents have nothing that uses propane would be something "Real&quot .

The only item readily available on the list provided by the Police would be propane. The problem is propane is used in home cooking and welding. Thus the mere possession of a propane cylinder proves nothing but on the other hand possession of such a cylinder can show that this is more then research on how to do damage to people in the school, i.e. actual building of what would be needed to do the damage wanted. Context may be important. i.e. the boys were found in the same house as a propane cylinder, but the propane cylinder was being used by one of their parents to do repairs on their water pipes. In such a context, the cylinder proves nothing. On the other hand if their parents do NOT have a blow torch that uses propane, why did they have a propane cylinder? (If that is the case, if the boys had a propane cylinder, a fact that has NOT been released and thus is pure speculation on my part).

Just a comment, that, hopefully, the police did not jump on some teenagers do what teenagers do, but instead went after someone actually preparing to do harm.

6. Yeah, we certainly don't want the police abusing their powers, now do we?

As long as we're speculating, my speculation is that it was a damn good thing that these kids were stopped before they could do any serious damage, and that circumstances exist which corroborate a close call.

I'm not sure I agree that "many if not most" teenage boys research "rifles, submachine guns, bombs and other explosives" on the internet or elsewhere. Do you know of studies to support that?

It's a small, pretty tight-knit community for being part of L.A. county. This is so scary. Yes, it can happen anywhere....

When kids get into middle school they become mean little twerps. Bullying, name calling, physical abuse... the list goes on.

Back when I was in school, you got into fights but that was the extent of it. When my brother (8 years my junior) was in school, kids brought knives to school and there were stabbings. Now kids who are bullied just take out those who they see as causing them pain.

Is that justice? The kids in that position think so because they, as most kids, can't really see past the end of their own noses. The become focused on eliminating the problem in a permanent way instead of just walking up and braking the nose of the jack wagon who is doing bullying.

So what has changed since we went to school? Spanking was eliminated. Kids were passed on who couldn't read. "In school suspension" was implemented. Now we have to have cops in the schools in the hopes of keeping them from tearing each other apart.

When I went to school if you talked back to a teacher he/she would haul you out of the room and light your butt up. We learned, most of us anyway, that there was acceptable behavior and unacceptable behavior. If you were caught fighting, you both got your tail beat. What do we have now? A situation where kids think that killing other kids is the answer. It's not caused by tv, video games, etc.... It's caused by a severe lack of respect on the part of the kids today. If you spank your kids you have social services at your door. If you don't, they stand a good chance of ending up in the system because they think that rules are for other people.

So what is the answer? Ozzy and Harriet days are gone. Most families cannot afford to have a parent stay at home. Schools cannot discipline. Cops are in schools. Kids can get access to weapons.

What is the answer?

13. I hope the school officials share their methodology on preventing another mass shooting.

It's not as if the NRA is going to take that sort of proactive, positive, invaluable sort of action.
