Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) has a plan to discourage immigrants from sending money back to families in other countries by taxing them at 100 percent.

The Minnesota Republican Congresswoman, who has in the past asserted children fleeing violence in Central America were “invading” the United States, told a conference call with Numbers USA that it “truly is war against the American people,” Right Wing Watch reported.

Bachmann opined that the solution to the crisis was to “deport right on the border,” and to confiscate Americans’ land if needed to “build a real fence.” “Mexico, El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala, those countries are laughing at us because they’re making money with their corrupt governments in conjunction with these international criminal cartels, they’re all making money and kickbacks,” she noted.

“What I believe we should do is have a 100 percent tax on remittances, the money that illegal aliens send back to these countries.” Bachmann explained. “We would have phone call from the president of these countries in five minutes saying, ‘What can we do? We want to keep this money flowing into our economy.”

Will everyone sending money abroad now have to show their current visa stamp in their passport to Western Union and the like? Will Western Union employees be required to determine if a green card is forged or not? What about the other many legal statuses like F-1 students, H-1b professionals, I-797 pending adjustment of status applicants.B-1/B-2 business visitors or tourists? Most of the people in these cash transfer companies are untrained in knowing who is here legally and who is not and whose visa has expired. And this will put a further burden on them to report all monetary transfers to the IRS. If anything, this will impede international business.

What exactly does she think the Presidents of these countries can do to stop people from coming to this country. Also, after the money is taxed what does she expect the workers to do; just go home in mass. Furthermore, how is the government supposed to get the money? Is the money supposed to be taxed when the person is paid, when they attempt to send the money to their family, or at some point after the money has been sent?

There are those of us who LIVE overseas and remit money INTO the US and spend money here which goes into the economy. We can't expect to unilaterally tax immigrants at 100% without other countries doing the same.
