Former White House Press Secretary James Brady Dead at 73

Source: NBC

Former White House Press Secretary James Brady, who was famously shot during the attempt on then-President Ronald Reagan's life in 1981, has died. He was 73.

"Jim touched the lives of so many and has been a wonderful husband, father, friend and role model," his family said in a statement. "We are enormously proud of Jim's remarkable accomplishments - before he was shot on the fateful day in 1981 while serving at the side of President Ronald Reagan and in the days, months and years that followed. Jim Brady's zest for life was apparent to all who knew him, and despite his injuries and the pain he endured every day, he used his humor, wit and charm to bring smiles to others and make the world a better place."

Brady was confined to a wheelchair after being shot and went on to become a leading voice for gun control.

Looking at the comments sections of some news sites and threads in some firearms forums, people are already starting to celebrate his death.

I've had my disagreements with him, but in the end he was only doing what he believed was right.

He and his family have had a very personal stake in this, and he did not deserve to suffer the way that he did.

Rest in peace, Jim.

during a White House tour in 1986. This was back when you could still tour the WH fairly easily. It was a quiet day mid-week..and not during the normal tourist season. He was in his wheelchair looking out a window. The guides/guards on site simply said "that's former WHPS Brady, and he's here today on a visit - but leave him alone."

The 1986 Firearm Owners Protection Act, IIRC, leaned more heavily in favor of Jim and Sarah Brady than it did the NRA.

Since Reagan could not get elected in today's climate, he sure as heck would not have supported Brady's activism.
Reagan was a political weather vane, saying whatever was popular at the time he said it.

Mitt Romney copied Reagan's "popular, for the moment" style, and that's how he became the Governor of Massachusetts.

Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act

The Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act (Pub.L. 103–159, 107 Stat. 1536, enacted November 30, 1993), commonly called the Brady Law, is an Act of the United States Congress that instituted federal background checks on firearm purchasers in the United States.

It was signed into law by President Bill Clinton on November 30, 1993, and went into effect on February 28, 1994. The Act was named after James Brady, who was shot by John Hinckley, Jr. during an attempted assassination of President Ronald Reagan on March 30, 1981.

Their work will certainly go on without him, and hopefully their efforts will even increase. They do good work in the area of gun control . . . an issue on which we must persist, despite the odds.

a quote from an article concerning his view on gun-control as Clinton signed the Brady Bill into law:

The Brady law — formally known as the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act — required a five-day wait and background check before a handgun could be sold. In November 1993, as President Bill Clinton signed the bill into law, Brady said: "Every once in a while you need to wake up and smell the propane. I needed to be hit in the head before I started hitting the bricks."

How typical of the right - needing to be hit in the head before realizing the impact of what you were opposing.

Reagan was also shot and almost died, but recovered to be a great president. He opposed gun control.
Brady was shot and suffered brain damage. He supported gun control.

Draw your own conclusions.

You think that Hinckley wanted a “do over” once he found out about Jodie Foster’s orientation?

I suppose I’m not enough of a Christian. No empathy for someone who did so much to destroy this country.

I had forgotten he was so young when he was shot. May his memory be for a blessing.

And may Hinckley's name and memory be erased.

I wonder if his wounds contributed to his early demise? The article does not provide a cause of death...
