Hammond condemns 'intolerable suffering' in Gaza

By Tim Ross, Political Correspondent
9:00PM BST 02 Aug 2014

The British public is “deeply disturbed” by the suffering of the people of Gaza, Philip Hammond, the Foreign Secretary, has said.

His comments are the Government’s strongest condemnation so far of the crisis in the Middle East.

In an interview with The Sunday Telegraph, Mr Hammond said he had received thousands of emails, from a “broad swathe” of people, expressing horror at the impact of Israel’s bombardment on Gaza’s civilian population.

The Government agreed that the situation in Gaza had become “simply intolerable”, he said.

Mr Hammond also raised concerns that Israel’s military action, launched in response to Hamas rocket fire, would lead to an increase in anti-Semitic attacks in Britain.

Note: Hammond (member of the Cameron government) is a British conservative.

In May 2012, he said same-sex marriage is "too controversial".[17] In January 2013 during a visit to the University of London Royal Holloway's Egham campus in Surrey he compared same-sex-marriage to incest.[17] In May 2013 Philip Hammond abstained and became one of four Cabinet Ministers not to vote in favour of gay marriage.

This whole mess is the handiwork of the British Empire's colonial policies brought forward to the 21st century with its ignoble support of Israeli actions good or bad along, with other western countries. IMO, there is hardly any credibility left in what the British or US governments say when it comes to the issue of the Palestinians.

British and US governments, whether called 'liberal' or 'conservative' have supported Israeli actions against Palestinians pretty much 100%. Though it appears it could be changing, at least with lone people speaking out because their conscience is completely shocked, the government policies remain the same. I hope it changes in our lifetime. We really must take a good hard look at the Palestinians' point of view, what they want and how we can help. If anyone has any recommended web sites, I'll check them out.

I'll check them out. Look forward to reading some on the Palestinian side of things. I want to hear from Palestinians. They're lacking in most of the western media I've been reading.

Mornings in Jenin - wonderful novel based on the experiences of Palestinians in the refuge camp of Jenin. STRONGLY recommend it. I'm a retired high school teacher, and when i began my teaching career, I was totally ignorant about the details of the history of Israel.....all I "knew" was what i read in Uris novels, and of course about the horrific holocaust. My teaching then was definitely "pro-Israeli". Then I had a Palestinian girl in my class....who told the class about about her father and family being shot at as they were forced to run - barefoot from their house, to which they were NEVER allowed to return. Her account made me start investigating, and made me MUCH more understanding of, and sympathetic to, the Palestinians. Ms Bigmack PS the author is Susan Abulhawa

myself a lot these past few weeks. There's a whole other side to this story than what we've heard growing up in the west, especially if we only follow western corporate mass media.

They just had an update on Al Jazerah about the casualty figures from this massacre:

1,672 dead (80% civilians)
9,000 injured (2.500 of that total of injured people are children)
250,000+ displaced.

2500 CHILDREN INJURED !!!!!
200+ CHILDREN DEAD !!!!!!

How on earth can any leader in the world sit by and watch this massacre unfold???

will have difficulty recovering given the destruction of infrastructure and the siege......I don't know when they will or should stop counting the casualties. Those who have lost breadwinners will also be challenged economically.
