Netanyahu Tells U.S. 'Not To Ever Second Guess Me Again' On Hamas
Source: Associated Press
MATTHEW LEE, Associated Press
WASHINGTON (AP) Following the quick collapse of the cease-fire in Gaza, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told the White House not to force a truce with Palestinian militants on Israel.
Sources familiar with conversations between Netanyahu and senior U.S. officials, including Secretary of State John Kerry, say the Israeli leader advised the Obama administration "not to ever second guess me again" on the matter. The officials also said Netanyahu said he should be "trusted" on the issue and about the unwillingness of Hamas to enter into and follow through on cease-fire talks.
The Obama administration on Friday condemned "outrageous" violations of an internationally brokered Gaza cease-fire by Palestinian militants and called the apparent abduction of an Israeli soldier a "barbaric" action.
The strong reaction came as top Israeli officials questioned the effort to forge the truce, accusing the U.S. and the United Nations of being naive in assuming the radical Hamas movement would adhere with its terms. The officials also blamed the Gulf state of Qatar for not forcing the militants to comply.

(19,581 posts)I mean really, Netanyahu gets to speak like that to our President and Secretary of State? Netanyahu, may be correct that Hamas is not to be trusted, I'm sure, an assumption, that was not lost on our President and Secretary of State, but Netanyahu is short sighted, because he is unwilling to listen to reason, and the same cycle of attacks, killings and attacks goes on and on. There is a solution, Kerry and President Obama have been trying to introduce it, a 2 state system. Israel, however wants no part of it. So, we get this supposedly tough talk from a very short sighted man?

I also believe there is a racial component here, as the Prime Minister has disrespected President Obama in ways that he never would with a white Republican in the White House.

(5,586 posts)Now that is a bit of an over-reaction. There is a reason this conflict has been going on for 50 years. Nobody really gives a shit about the Palestinians. Not the Israeli's, not the Jordanians, and definitely not the Egyptians.
The conflict in Iraq is orders of magnitude more likely to spawn a larger, regional war IMO.

(57,936 posts)With the cease-fire in tatters fewer than two hours after it took effect with an attack that killed two Israeli troops and left a third missing, President Barack Obama demanded that those responsible release the soldier.
Obama and other U.S. officials did not directly blame Hamas for the abduction. But they made clear they hold Hamas responsible for, or having influence over, the actions of all factions in the Gaza Strip. The language was a distinct change from Thursday when Washington was focused on the deaths of Palestinian civilians.
. . . .
"It's going to be very hard to put a cease-fire back together again if Israelis and the international community can't feel confident that Hamas can follow through on a cease-fire commitment," he said. His comment reflected uncertainty in the U.S. and elsewhere that Hamas was actually responsible for the incident or if some other militant group was to blame.

I have been pointing this out for several days on DU. The plight of the Palestinians is tragic. But the problem is that Palestine is a group of people, not a country with reliable, trustworthy law enforcement.
Palestinians have not shown that they are capable of enforcing a cease-fire, much less a peace treaty against segments of their own population who violate it.
That is why negotiation is so difficult in this situation.
I don't know whether you remember that Palestinians were able to travel into Israel, work and go home safely not so long ago.
Then some crazy Palestinian faction decided to launch the Second Intifada.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second_Intifada
As I have also pointed out in other posts, wars most often end in one of three ways:
1) one side just stops fighting and goes home.
2) the parties come to terms and negotiate a compromise settlement.
3) one side conquers the other. Think WWII.
Israel and Palestine have tried number 2. They have tried negotiation many times. Unless they try it again, one or the other will conquer.
Look at history and you will learn that the parties have three choices. If they want to live together in peace they have to a) negotiate a compromise that is comprehensive and with which they both agree to live and b) enforce the negotiated settlement.
The Palestinians are running out of time. They have lost virtually every war they fought. (I think they sort of won one of them.) It's tough, but if they want their children to grow up in peace, the peace has to start with them. The reason the US backs Israel is that the Palestinians have committed so many terrorist attacks and appear to be unable to enforce peace among their own people.
It's very tragic, but we have to look at it realistically because not doing so will cost many, many more lives and set the region back decades.

Enough with the thoughtless hyperbole, alright? it makes the rest of us standing for Palestinians look bad, and it's not even remotely accurate to begin with.

If you want to draw the comparison with Moshe Feiglin, then hey, that's more apt. But do be sure you are drawing the comparison on that criteria.
it's an accuracy thing. Hitler's got a lot of things going on, you have to specify hat point you're drawing comparison to, y'know?

(6,699 posts)Bibi couldn't care less about the lives of Palestinians....men, women, children...anyone. He wants them to think twice before they elect Hamas to represent them in the future. "A vote for Hamas is a vote for another wave of overwhelming brutality again, and again, and again..."
He doesn't want to make peace with Hamas, nor does Hamas have any desire to make peace with their oppressors. Hamas wants to push the Israelis into the sea, or worse. I can't say that I blame them.
Reverse the rolls for just a second: Put the Israeli's in the place of the Palestinians. How would they react? Would they be content to be caged in the middle of nowhere, not allowed to travel or trade outside their own miserable existence? The atrocities that go on DAILY in Gaza BREW the hatred that Hamas perpetuates. I am not one bit surprised by what has transpired.
Someone posted this either on this site or another:
It is well worth your time to watch, if you haven't already. An Israeli Soldier's story. Extremely eye-opening as to what goes on DAILY in this hell we call Gaza. Unreal, and yet we blame Hamas totally for their aggression. Absurd.

(1,113 posts)Israel repeatedly uses its US - made weapons for advancing the cause Netanyahu has repeatedly stated as his goal, "The complete elimination of the Arabs as a viable community and political force in Palestine.
Why do we have to enable them to use every little pretext for conflict as an excuse to disproportionately overreact and wreck the entire Palestinian population and infrastructure?
They're doing everything they can, in every situation, to hurt, destroy, REMOVE the Arabs from Palestine.
It's time for the US to stop enabling this aggression, or to proactively stop it.
