Market Basket halts pay to senior employees

Source: Boston Globe

Market Basket executives ratcheted up the pressure on its protesting workforce Friday by withholding paychecks of a group of middle managers to ensure they report to work on Monday, the deadline the company has set for employees to return to their job.

Several managers said they received a letter by certified mail Friday from chief executives James Gooch and Felicia Thornton notifying them they are not being paid because of their “ongoing failure to report to work,” but would receive their checks if they reported to work Monday, August 4.

Meanwhile using that disgusting word while claiming to have an autistic family member, speaks volumes.

Also, don't believe the hype of our low posts as we read more often than we write, and have served on too many DU Juries to count --- and PROUD of it.

I am the mother of a 40something severely retarded daughter. What word should he have used? cretin?? that is the word that we fought to be replaced by something more appropriate, like retarded. Now retarded has become a word not to be spoken while many of these other words are allowed! I have also as a mother been told I cannot use the word normal, as no one is normal. We cannot use the word gifted to describe our children who are high IQ. Where does it stop, people?????? Let me know! Please since some of you half my age and experience seem to know it all. Feel free to PM me and chew me out. But I am the one who has changed diapers, listened to doctors' insults, been accosted on the street by total strangers who believe that the only way you get a handicapped/retarded/ birth defects child is that you tried to abort said child. Please people. Stop with the PC **** when it comes to this word!!!!

people, pouncing on that word is not the way to go about it. While it is so PC to do so, it does not solve the problem, and it puts more pressure on people like me, who get lectured for using that word or another word. Has not 40 some years of changing diapers, caregiving 24/7 earned me the right to have an opinion on what words should come out of my mouth?? Shouldn't all the mothers and fathers, brothers and sisters who love and care for these children get the right to make these decisions, not some johnny come lately?? Ps. I have seen my daughter do things that most mothers of normal children would be proud to see in their children. You do not diminish my daughter, or people like her by saying the word retarded. But you do disrespect me and other parents by calling that word a slur.

And I don't feel like I was pouncing. I told them that I understood their feelings towards the CEOs.

If this person is sincere, then they haven't thought this through.

The teabagger example was a bit of serendipity because the alternative meaning already existed and could be redirected to mock them.

For the santorum example, there was no other usage aside from proper names, so there were no conflicts with pre-existing terms. This analogy would apply if he was using the word "libtard" as a name for, say, a particular style of decorative wood carving, but not for anything related to politics.

"Libtard" is a word that was has no meaning other than to disparage liberals. Trying to give it an alternative meaning within the same discussions only confuses things and sends messages that you probably don't intend to send.

Or the whole "throw their words back at them" thing was a sham and it's just trolling. Either way, it has all the value of santorum. The substance, that is.

that wording, "...would receive their checks if they reported to work on Monday" could be upheld in court if they showed up, collected their checks, and just left again. Boy, I'd love to see that. "Thank you for my paycheck, I'm sharing it with my co-workers. Now fuck you, I'm back to the boycott."

I drive by a couple of times since I have other stores nearby I visit for things. And the parking lot is empty. People that are there protesting park off elsewhere so as to not give the illusion of customers or workers inside.

It's deathly quiet. And frustrating, cause they have some stuff I want, but I refuse to cross a line.

It is illegal under Federal Wage Law to NOT pay an employee any wages they've earned. Market Basket's Human Resource Department (all of them) must be on vacation. Or the memo writers are clueless. Not sure which one is which.....

and the nearby Hannaford's is trying its damnedest to keep up with all the new customers. It was a madhouse there today. Of course, every register was open and had a line. But the employees were working hard and the shelves were stocked.

If the Arthur S. faction (the pile on debt, overtax and underpay employees crowd) wins, I wonder how many shoppers will return to them. I won't. I usually shop half the time at Hannaford's and half at MB. It's no skin off my back to continue shopping 100% at Hannaford's.

on edit:
Today, I discovered Cowboy Caviar at Hannaford's. It's a tangy bean salad. Yum.
