Soldiers get $92M in debt relief under settlement

Source: Omaha World Herald

By Steve Liewer

Most people who looked at Staff Sgt. James Wilson would see an honorable soldier, a man who has served his country well for the past 12 years.

The owners of the now-bankrupt Rome Finance Co. looked at the Iowa National Guardsman and saw a mark to be milked for cash.

Since 2010, Rome Finance has taken more than $3,500 in payments and interest from Wilson’s paycheck to pay for a laptop computer valued at $1,200. The company says he still owes $2,500.

“It’s just so wrong to treat members of our military this way — to sell them overpriced items at inflated interest rates,” Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller said at a press conference Tuesday in Council Bluffs.

FULL story at link.

Let me just say I'm a vet. But this worship of soldiers and vets by Republicans is absurd. Everybody should be protected under the law from predatory lenders. Your veteran or service status should make no difference. Every person that has a disease should be able to obtain health care coverage.

I'm going to find the name of that company and see if they're still in "business." If so I'm going to report them.
