ETA News Release: Unemployment Insurance Weekly Claims Report (03/29/2012)

Note: This week's release reflects the annual revision to the weekly unemployment claims seasonal adjustment factors. The seasonal adjustment factors used for the UI Weekly Claims data from 2007 forward, along with the resulting seasonally adjusted values for initial claims and continuing claims, have been revised. These revised historical values, as well as the seasonal adjustment factors that will be used through calendar year 2012, can be accessed at the bottom of the following link: http://www.oui.doleta.gov/press/2012/032911.asp

UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT

SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending March 24, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 359,000, a decrease of 5,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 364,000. The 4-week moving average was 365,000, a decrease of 3,500 from the previous week's revised average of 368,500.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.6 percent for the week ending March 17, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week's revised rate of 2.7 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending March 17 was 3,340,000, a decrease of 41,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 3,381,000. The 4-week moving average was 3,387,750, a decrease of 21,750 from the preceding week's revised average of 3,409,500.

Here for your viewing pleasure are this week's data, brought to you as a nonpartisan public service. This is just one example of the good work your civil servants are performing for you.

That word initial is important. The report does not count all claims, just the new ones filed this week.

ETA: I edited my post to include pinqy's reply, which is an important part of this week's report. Thanks pinqy.

Unfortunately, the link EDTA gave to its explanatory page seems to be a dead link. I can't find the right one. Maybe in a while, EDTA will make it right. In the meanwhile, try this:
