Germany expels CIA official in US spy row

The German government has ordered the expulsion of a CIA official in Berlin in response to two cases of alleged spying by the US.
The official is said to have acted as a CIA contact at the US embassy, reports say, in a scandal that has infuriated German politicians.
A 31-year-old German intelligence official was arrested last week on suspicion of spying.

"The representative of the US intelligence services at the embassy of the United States of America has been told to leave Germany," government spokesman Steffen Seibert said.

Also, this reminds me of a thread a few days ago that asked which of our "allies" does the US really trust. I believe my reply begain None, if....."

(10,575 posts)And perhaps more importantly, given the massive amount of publicity given to the recent revelations about NSA spying inside Germany, why was this particular operation authorized in the first place? Is finding out what the German parliament is doing behind closed doors about the Snowden revelations worth the price of causing irreparable harm to U.S. diplomatic, economic and intelligence relations with Germany?

Either way, it's interesting: The admin's curiosity over Germany's reaction to Snowden's revelations seems to have caused more damage to our relations with Germany that did Snowden's revelations.
