BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (AP) A smoky wildfire burning in southern California forced the evacuation of some 500 homes, authorities said.
The Kern County Sheriff's office said late Saturday night that the evacuation order was for parts of the Wofford Heights area, which is about 30 miles northeast of Bakersfield.
The blaze had grown to 810 acres by late Saturday night and was just 5 percent contained, federal fire officials said.
Flames were visible in Wofford Heights, which was about a mile north of where the blaze was most active.

(29,721 posts)is terrifying. I will never be complacent about fire ever again after having lived in CA and many fire seasons.

(8,159 posts)I would never be standing like this guy watching a fire that close.
We evacuated 14 head of horses, 3 dogs, and 2 cats. As we were driving out ash was coming down so bad it was hard to see the road.
We sold after that and moved to western NE but it's not the same so now were back in the Black Hills.
Good luck all in California. I'm afraid your going to need it this summer.

(3,919 posts)the topography in this area is very steep. the road(s) narrow, windy, and some unpaved. lots of brushy oaks and manzanita, etc. the residents have weathered many a forest fire in their area. if the fire is 1 mile away, because they are in the "canyon" of the kern river watershed, the situation is extremely dangerous.
