Scientists Warn of Rising Oceans as Antarctic Ice Melts
Source: New York Times
The collapse of large parts of the ice sheet in West Antarctica appears to have begun and is almost certainly unstoppable, with global warming accelerating the pace of the disintegration, two groups of scientists reported Monday.
The finding, which had been feared by some scientists for decades, means that a rise in global sea level of at least 10 feet may now be inevitable. The rise may continue to be relatively slow for at least the next century or so, the scientists said, but sometime after that it will probably speed up so sharply as to become a crisis.
This is really happening, said Thomas P. Wagner, who runs NASAs programs on polar ice and helped oversee some of the research. Theres nothing to stop it now. But you are still limited by the physics of how fast the ice can flow.
Two papers scheduled for publication this week, in the journals Science and Geophysical Research Letters, attempt to make sense of an accelerated flow of glaciers seen in parts of West Antarctica in recent decades.

(3,596 posts)At least according to his public statements. Personally I think he knows in his heart that pumping billions of tons of hydrocarbons into the atmosphere over the course of a century + has most certainly affected the planet's climate.
But what does he care? He and Senator I have my head up my ass (aka Inhoffe) are old enough they will both be dead before the worst of this comes home. Inhoffe has at best another 20 years left and Rubio has maybe 40-50.

"many of the worlds coastal cities would eventually have to be abandoned."
and begin to raise rice with your new, free irrigation which, about that time, will have become a scarce commodity for people who have traditionally raised food.
Gonna be a big market for homes made out of shipping containers too (They float, right?). That's a lot of people, like hundreds of millions displaced by this.
Might keep a village going. Or if we are still choosing our Freedom from the menu of the wealthy, maybe make some money.
Because this is here.

(11,087 posts)(and Fox News). Your efforts to delay any action on global warming have succeeded. It is now too late to stop a climate disaster. How proud you must feel.

(11,087 posts)When the scientists say, "almost certainly unstoppable," the global reaction should be, "Oh, no!"

(5,732 posts)I think that the oil companies and people like the Koch Brothers have spent a lot of money to spread denial about the global climate crisis, but they are costing themselves their own long term sustainability because the climate problems will collapse the world economy long before the seas rise 10ft.

(36,478 posts)It was many years ago but I heard Dennis Miller once say that he didn't care if the planet heated up so life was unbearable for his great-great-great-descendants - he wouldn't know them anyway. I don't get that mindset. I would think if you thought that way you would not reproduce, but how else can you explain the Koch's & oil company execs? Because I don't for a minute believe they are climate change deniers, but rather greedy profit takers. Personally I think we're fucked. There is no political will to change. You can't get most Americans to give up free plastic bags at the grocery store.
This: because the climate problems will collapse the world economy long before the seas rise 10ft.

(22,651 posts)Even the blue holes in many places are evidence of sea rise as the water in some is 40 feet deep & there is evidence of owl nests & ancient fire pits. Not to long ago those blue holes were dry caves.
There is even one cave in Florida where a ledge a couple feet under ocean level had remains of the humans who lived there only 200 years ago.
You can tell now where it will be really bad. Just try to buy flood insurance in some places.
