China nuclear plants a threat to Taiwan: NSB chief
Source: China Post
Taiwan is at risk of nuclear disasters and radioactive incidents as more than a dozen nuclear power plants are located along coastal areas of the Chinese mainland, National Security Bureau (NSB, 國安局 ) head Tsai De-sheng (蔡得勝 ) said yesterday.
Fielding questions at the Legislative Yuan yesterday, the nation's top intelligence chief said nuclear power will become the primary source of energy for China in the future.

Once a nuclear disaster or radioactive incident occurs, Tsai said, the NSB will escort national leaders and senior Cabinet members to a safe house as soon as possible. An annual drill has focused on having national heads evacuate in case of emergency, he added.

Speaking during the same session, Defense Minister Yen Ming (嚴明 ) said the military will immediately relocate important military facilities and installations once a nuclear accident happens.

Via Chinas nuclear reactors endanger Taiwan, but national leaders will be safe

(22,000 posts)It should be the other way around. They should throw the leaders in the nuclear plant.
On one hand I agree that this "protect the leadership first" thing is disturbing. But the leaders in question are the leaders in Taiwan, and they're talking about effects of a reactor accident on mainland China, so they're not the leaders responsible for the plants. Indeed, I think the real purpose of making and (more importantly) publicizing these contingency plans is to express displeasure with and exert pressure against China building the reactors.

(22,000 posts)I didn't catch that part. I guess the island is close enough if there was a major meltdown. Taipei is only about 150 miles from Fuzhou. It looks like there is one under construction near there and one operating a little north of there.
