Bomb attack in Nigeria capital kills at least 16

Abuja (AFP) - A bomb attack Thursday at a bus station on the outskirts of Nigeria's capital killed at least 16 people, an AFP journalist and a witness said.

An AFP correspondent at the Asokoro General Hospital in Abuja saw nine dead bodies which had been brought from scene of the attack, while a witness at the same hospital who requested anonymity confirmed that seven other corpses had arrived.

The explosion happened in the suburb of Nyanya, close to a motor park where at least 70 people died in a blast on 14 April.

Witnesses said it went off near a police checkpoint.

Most of Boko Haram's attacks have been in the north-east of Nigeria.

But the bombing on 14 April, which it later claimed, raised fears that the militants could be trying to expand their area of operation.
