Russia fears Crimea water shortage as supply drops

Source: BBC

Russian officials say a water shortage in Crimea is threatening to become acute as Ukraine has reduced the supply via a key canal.

Ukraine does not recognise the new authorities in Crimea who are backed by Moscow. Russia made the peninsula part of its territory last month.

Crimea's harvest of grapes, rice, maize and soya will be ruined if it does not get more water soon, officials say.

Russia says the Crimea-Ukraine border is now officially a state border.

What would stop Russia from rolling into Ukraine and increasing the water supply via that same canal, saying they need to do it to protect their citizens and national interests? Would Ukraine stop them? Would we?

which they claim was a national interest. So I don't think it's that far fetched that they might make the same claim about water rights. We'll see I guess.

It was just over the border of Crimea and in Ukraine. It is still currently occupied by Russia as far as I understand. I don't know how far into Ukraine the nearest water station is though.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has presented a draft law to create a gambling zone in Crimea, now that the Kremlin has declared the Ukrainian territory part of Russia.

So Mr. Putin, you and your Russian "Agriculture Minister" better connect-up to your Russian fresh water. It takes water to grow crops and I doubt the EU countries want to share anything with Russia these days.

I know your grapes are doomed, even a couple of days with no water ruins that crop.

Ukraine’s DTEK Says Crimea Power Supply at Risk From Debts

DTEK, the Ukrainian energy company led by the nation’s richest man, said customers in Crimea run the risk of power cuts after they didn’t fully pay for electricity they consumed in March.

Companies and organizations owe Krymenergo, DTEK’s Crimean unit, 741 million Hryvnia ($64.4 million), the company with offices in Kiev and Donetsk said in a statement on its website today. DTEK is controlled by Rinat Akhmetov, who has a personal fortune of about $11.9 billion, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

“The main condition of supplying power to the peninsula is 100 percent payment in Ukraine’s currency,” according to the statement. The unit isn’t authorized to supply customers if it hasn’t received payment, Dmitriy Gontar, director for sales at DTEK Krymenergo, said in the statement.

The escalating crisis in eastern Ukraine and Russia’s annexation of Crimea last month led to the worst standoff against the U.S. and Europe since the collapse of the Soviet Union. Five Western leaders agreed to extend sanctions on Russia today, according to an e-mail from the office of U.K. Prime Minister David Cameron.
