Glenn Greenwald Is Coming To America
Source: TPM
TOM KLUDT APRIL 10, 2014, 11:45 AM EDT
For the first time since his reporting on the National Security Agency's global surveillance programs made Edward Snowden a household name, Glenn Greenwald plans to return to the United States.
Greenwald, who lives in Rio de Janeiro, intends to head to New York City on Friday to accept the prestigious Polk Award for outstanding journalism. He will share the award with Laura Poitras, Barton Gellman and Ewen MacAskill, all journalists who have also reported on the Snowden leaks.
Greenwald told the Huffington Post he wants to attend the ceremony because certain factions in the U.S. government have deliberately intensified the threatening climate for journalists.
Its just the principle that I shouldnt allow those tactics to stop me from returning to my own country, he told HuffPost.

Moreoever, this sort of thing has happened even to Greenwald's husband as well as Snowden's lawyer:

That is it exactly...and it happens here on every thread about Greenwald or Snowden.

(10,007 posts)I can't judge your posts based upon claims of longstanding service to the Left, because that is a claim that some random guy on the Internet can't prove.
I can judge your posts on their content, which essentially comprise NSA talking points on how to deflect and transform criticism of the program into criticism of Snowden.

Hate is a very strong emotion. One I wouldn't waste on this clown. If you don't think he's hoping some feds swoop down to arrest or question him so he can whine about what a victim he is, you're delusional.

Long Before Helping Expose NSA Spying, Journalist Laura Poitras Faced Harassment from U.S. Agents
http://www.democracynow.org/2013/6/17/long_before_helping_expose_nsa_spying
LAURA POITRAS: Ive been stopped at the border since 2006, since I started working on a series of films looking at U.S. post-9/11. And so, Ive beenIve actually lost count of how many times Ive been detained at the border, but its, I think, around 40 times. And
~snip~
LAURA POITRAS: Yeah. So I was met by two agents at Newark. One of them is Agent Wassum. And Iwhen they met me, I took out my pen and paper to note their names and the time andbecause Ive always taken notes, so I have a record of the questions that Im asked and how long Im detained for, whats the focus of the interrogation, what they are doing to me. And on this occasion, I took out my pen, and I was ordered to put away my pen. And I didnt, and I continued to take notes. And I was ordered again to put away the pen, and I didnt. And then he threatened to handcuff me for not putting away my pen. And at that point, I put away my pen and then walked to Immigration and took out my pen again to take notes, was ordered again to put away my pen, and then was taken into secondary screening. And I asked to speak to a supervisor, explained I was a journalist, explained that legal counsel has told me that I should be taking notes of my detention and interrogation. And then I was told that I couldnt take notes, that I was free to take notes after I was finished being questioned. And then
JUAN GONZÁLEZ: Under the theory that what? The pen was a weapon?
LAURA POITRAS: Oh, yeah, thats right. They said that my pen was a dangerous weapon. So thats whatthats Agent Wassum who said that, that my pen was a threat to them. And, you know, I mean, in terms of the context, you have to understand that Im surrounded by border agents who are all carrying guns, and Im taking out, you know, a pen that they find threatening. And so, this was, you know, profoundly upsetting. And then I was taken intoI was taken directly into an interrogation room and questioned. I took out my pen again. I was ordered by another agent to put it away. And this went on for quite some time. And I was told during this interrogationI mean, Im always asserting my rights as a journalist to not reveal my work, my sources.

(10,007 posts)Snowden is constantly criticized for his Libertarian stance, yet you try and paint him as a Soviet-era Communist? Is that because he went to Russia?
(Pssst! The Soviet Union disintegrated in 1991 - that's 23 years ago. It was replaced by a gangster-capitalist regime that is sort of the opposite of communism.)

(65,616 posts)you can fool people into thinking it is about the person.
It gets people arguing about Snowden's and Greenwald's motives, rather than discussing the NSA's crimes.
It's a tactic.

(6,785 posts)It's largely about waging war on anyone that embarrasses or criticizes Obama. Which is fine. I'm sure I've got some heroes somewhere I've got huge blind spots about too. Pretty much everyone does.
There are a handful of what appear to be genuine nationalists floating around, but I don't see any of them in this thread yet.

(12,530 posts)But now? Crickets.
There have also been several people (largely from the same pool) who have made the claim that Snowden should have made official complaints up his chain of command rather than absconding with the documents and releasing them. Now Snowden has said that he did make complaints using the proper channels, and he's challenged the NSA to officially deny this. So of course this group of people now claims Snowden is lying, among other things they've said in an attempt to discredit Snowden's latest utterance.
I detest, detest, detest liars and propagandists. I like honest Republicans (rare though they may be) better than I like lying Democrats, and I'm saying this despite knowing that some foaming-at-the-mouth authoritarian type will use the statement to try to make me into some sort of secret Republican. But those types are exactly the sort of worthless liars I'm referring to. This is a small but vocal group that I'm referring to. They can be found in every Snowden/Greenwald thread. There is NO demostrable evidence that Snowden has lied about anything to date. There's PLENTY of demonstrable evidence that some of our very own have lied and continue to lie right through their teeth in order to make you believe things they know not to be true, and in order to make you doubt some things that you do hold to be true. I'll never believe these people again without checking. If they tell me the sky is blue, I'm going to glance outside first to confirm.
