Stephen Colbert to replace David Letterman on "Late Show"

LAUREN MORASKI /CBS NEWS
Apr 10, 2014 12:06 PM EDT

CBS didn't waste too much time finding a new host for the "Late Show." Exactly a week after David Letterman announced his plans to retire, his replacement has been named.

Stephen Colbert, the host, writer and executive producer of "The Colbert Report," will succeed Letterman.

"Stephen Colbert is one of the most inventive and respected forces on television," CBS Chairman and CEO Les Moonves said in a statement Thursday. "David Letterman's legacy and accomplishments are an incredible source of pride for all of us here, and today's announcement speaks to our commitment of upholding what he established for CBS in late night."

I suspect that at least in the beginning, Comedy Central isn't going to replace Colbert since they know all the former Colbert Report fans are now going to go over to CBS to watch Colber there.

Oliver has a show on HBO so he is out. Comedy Central would be best serve to put reruns of a TV show in that 11:30 timeslot and call it a wash.

Thu Apr 10, 2014, 01:00 PM

Colbert goes mainstream! I doubt it'll be the exact same cookie-cutter format. They'll want to be competitive and they have a known brand in Colbert.

David Letterman took all his "intellectual property" with him to CBS when he left NBC. I remember when that happened and it was such big entertainment news (which was my beat back then), and there was SO much speculation - will NBC dig its heels in and not let him do the "Top 10 List" or the other stuff because NBC would claim it as "intellectual property"? Well, that didn't happen as we all know. Dave just brought the whole thing over to his new network and that was that.

Don't know if that'll happen here, though. I just saw on CNN that he's gonna do something different. But he's got such a known and established brand! I can't imagine they'd wanna fuck with it too much. THAT, after all, is what made him appealing enough to want to slot in when Dave leaves.

But then again, networks have been known to do stupid things.

but might not mesh well with 11:30 crowd. I think that's why Conan might not have done well with replacing Leno. And knowing that whomever takes over for Letterman would be the new kid on the block, Colbert brings in big name recognition over Ferguson. I think Colbert would give CBS strong competition against Fallon and Kimmel. And the last thing CBS wants is to put someone in that time slot and they fail. I doubt Colbert will have any issues but he will have to drop his Comedy Show personality.

I've also read that Ferguson prefers his time slot.

And so we made a choice, and it's about half and half. The girls for the most part are like, 'Get over it, you're Colbert,' but I was so young when this choice was given to us, I think that if somebody woke me up in the middle of the night and slapped me across the face I'd still say Stephen Col-BEAR. They bring him onto CBS, The Colbert Report is gone, they muzzle him and then don't renew his contract. Poof!

I mean it's no secret that they are leaning pretty right these days, we witnessed that with 60 Minutes.

Only half kidding.

Seriously, it's a huge loss for political satire and speaking truth to power. I think he'll do great, but it's definitely going to leave a hole. The Colbert Report is the best of the best.

I can see how he might be tired of doing the schtick though. He's probably ready for a change, though I hope he keeps up some of the biting satire, even if he's not in character. And yeah, I'm sure the money is a lot better.

This is a loss for satire.

According to Variety, the character is going to be left behind with the switch.

But, SC get's his reward for all the years of hard work. So it's good for him.

My sink-like-rock threads never fail to attract naysayers, but I'll add this to my rather long list of CORRECT (as opposed to "Right&quot judgment and gut calls over the years in the face of a chorus of dismissers in every case.

Below's my thread from the other day, wherein are found the requisite naysayers. To the present O.P. who says she is "upset and confused" I don't see why. And to the others who protested that he is "specific" to a comedic character, I submit that he has never been limited to that specificity, whether at the Correspondents Dinner where he totally obliterated and lambasted the press corps and Shrub, which is not a Character/O'LOOFAH position to take, or in interviews, or in his sister's political campaign.

The news item says he will retire the character-specific persona, fine, although if he wanted to he could do an occasional 3 minute bit.

So here's my wish, if not a PREDICTION, of the other day, and I would LUERVE to see O'LOOFAH's reaction right now:

Look at Jim Carrey. He started out as the really weird guy on "In Living Color" and did "Ace Ventura" but then went on to do serious roles like "The Truman Show" and "The Majestic".

Some people never break out of the roll that made them famous and this role is of someone with a LOT of negative characteristics I'm sure he will be happy to leave behind.

"The 49-year-old Colbert, who signed a five-year deal, said in a statement: "Simply being a guest on David Letterman's show has been a highlight of my career. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go grind a gap in my front teeth."

88. Would Have Preferred a Woman
Thu Apr 10, 2014, 02:17 PM
Apr 2014

I would have preferred if CBS had picked a woman, especially a black woman to replace David Letterman. At one point I thought Wanda Sykes would have been a good choice; however, I recently thought she was too political and opinionated. I do not think she would have been able to do good interviews with people like Sarah Palin and other right wing Republicans.

However, I think it would have been nice if they had picked a woman. As a result of Colbert being picked to replace Letterman the late night landscape stays the same, mainly older white men.

It's still amazing that so many right wingers still think he really is on their side. You would have thought his feature "The Word" would have tipped them off, but reading isn't a strong suit for many on the far right.

I imagine the Comedy Channel will tap into one of the very funny correspondents on either Stewart's or Colbert's show to carry on. It is too bad John Oliver got snapped up by HBO.

with one stone. Colbert's humor is suited for Colbert Report. It is not for the Late Show. Some will stay for the beginning, but they will be gone soon right along with the Fallon watchers. People want real humor at that time of night. They don't want to have to have to think whether they should laugh or not. Now, I don't watch tv, so it's no big deal to me. But I know there are those that do.... TV is getting so politically staffed, do they really need Internet Political Boards? Well, at least it wasn't Chelsea Hightower, whom I saw a few times passing in front of my daughter. Is she supposed to be funny?

"What you're going to get is the real Stephen Colbert," says CBS CEO Leslie Moonves, who hired him to replace David Letterman next year. "He said it's time to do something different. If he's going to be on our air for 20 years, as we all hope, it's not humanly possible to keep that character going."

I'll miss the Colbert Report though. I'm glad to hear his writing team is going with him, though I fear their creativity will be neutered on a major network and I hope the format of the show isn't typical of the late night formula (monologue, filler, interview, band).

Colbert's political satire is unparalleled, and to take him to a late night talk show is to essentially neutralize his political and satirical wit.

If he doesn't take his persona with him to CBS, I don't see myself following him there.
