European Air-Safety Body Says Airlines Should Avoid Crimean Airspace

Source: WSJ

PARIS--Airlines should avoid Crimean airspace because of potentially confusing air-traffic management in the region, the European Aviation Safety Agency said Thursday.

The Cologne, Germany-based agency said in a statement that it "strongly recommends to the national aviation authorities in EASA member states that all aircraft operators are made aware that the airspace should be avoided using available alternative routings."

The area that represents a potential danger is the airspace controlled by the flight information center at Simferopol.

"It is unsafe if more than one air-traffic service provider is in charge of a single Flight Information Region (FIR); no compromise can be made with the safety of the flying passengers," EASA Executive Director Patrick Ky is quoted as saying in the statement.
