Brazil bars Chevron execs from leaving over spill

Source: CNN

A federal court in Brazil has issued an order barring 17 executives from U.S. oil giant Chevron and Transocean Ltd. from leaving the country while it mulls criminal charges against them for an oil spill last year.

Among the 17 who were ordered Saturday by a federal judge in Rio de Janeiro to give up their passports is an American: George Buck, the chief operating officer of Chevron's Brazil division.

Kurt Glaubitz, a Chevron spokeman, said the company has not received a formal notification of the order.

"Any legal decision will be abided by the company and its employees," he said. "We will defend the company and its employees."

The oil spill occurred in deep water off the coast of Rio de Janeiro in November.

I wonder how these very wealthy executives feel about their passports being taken away as if they were maids to some wealthy sheiks.

Hint, it's in the post.

No doubt Repukes and their propaganda network will treat this like the Iran situation of 1979 - 1980.

but it rings so true.
I think that this is what Chomski ment recently when he said (I am paraphrasing here) that there is no analog in history to this astonishing, utterly outlandish partenship and that it is off the irrational spectrum of international behavior.

All the Republican Govs on the Gulf Coast are bought off by BP. They have chosen the foreign Oil corp. over their constituents. BP just got off of probation for the Texas City blast where they killed 15 and injured thousands. They got off even though they re-offended. That's the big difference. There is never any question about whether a BP executive would face jail time for anything committed here. It would NEVER happen!

The scope is much, MUCH bigger.

I like this approach in Brazil.
It IS people who commit the crimes, NOT "corporations".
Hold the criminals accountable,
including War Criminals & War Profiteers.

You will know them by their WORKS,
not by their excuses.

"Saying that the United States wants to help Brazil with technology and support to develop such oil reserves, Obama added America "could not be happier with the potential for a new, stable source of energy."

"And when you're ready to start selling, we want to be one of your best customers," he said.
