The Great Wall. Times Square. The Eiffel Tower.
Many of the worlds greatest, and most illuminated, monuments will go dark for an hour on Saturday for the eightth annual Earth Hour. More than 150 countries and millions of people will engage in a crowd-sourced conservation effort from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. local time, highlighting a growing need to protect the environment, while encouraging global action.
"It is always extraordinary to see cities and landmarks involved in Earth Hour, but in 2014 it is the stories and activities happening beyond the hour that show this event has evolved into a movement driven by the power of the crowd, Andy Ridley, the co-founder of Earth Hour, said in a press release.
This year's event has a heroic partner to help spur people into action as Spider-Man became the first superhero ambassador to join with the World Wildlife Fund-backed project.

(18,402 posts)Kind of fun--asked all the people who live on our floor to come for wine and food. We lit a kazillion candles all around our unit, turned out all the lights, and ate and talked by candlelight for a few hours. Good way to meet your neighbors!
Unfortunately, this year I didn't get my act together soon enough to clean, cook, and put out invitations. I guess if the lights are out though, I wouldn't have to clean all that well: no one can see the dust!
I'll have to surf the internet in the dark?

(1,807 posts)and depriving oneself. You don't have to sit in the dark to save energy or burn candles. Replace a 60w bulb with a 6w LED and you're pretty close to burning no energy at all.
Yeah, I know it's a symbolic thing, but there are real actions we all can take every day that amount to more than just symbolism.
// why yes, I am great fun at parties, why do you ask?

(1,968 posts)I hope it was OK that I do what I always do--I was in the living room with the dogs, under the light of an 8 watt LED. It was the only light--or electrical appliance, charger, etc.--on in the house.
If that wasn't OK, I failed Earth Day...but my electric bill will attest that I do stupendously well during the rest of Earth Year.

(101,321 posts)and even then, consider the energy input into them (made from animal fat? Look at the energy that goes into raising animals). They're massively inefficient as a form of light. If you want to make a point, use darkness.

(8,127 posts)the world would literally shut off EVERYTHING for a full day at least once a year.
Just to see the impacts of such a small gesture..
I remember the days after 911, it almost felt like the air was cleaner without the plane traffic (even tho I know it was only in my head)... lol
