Invisible Children Co-Founder Detained: SDPD
SDPD said he was found masturbating in public, vandalizing cars and possible under the influence of something
A co-founder for Invisible Children was detained in Pacific Beach Thursday night for being drunk in public and masturbating, according to San Diego Police Department.
Jason Russell, 33, was allegedly found masturbating in public, vandalizing cars and possibly under the influence of something, according to Lt. Andra Brown. He was detained at the intersection of Ingraham Street and Riviera Road.
Brown said Russell was acting very strange.
Police said they received several calls yesterday at 11:30 a.m. of a man in various stages of undress, running through traffic and screaming. Police described him as "in his underwear."

I stumbled upon the invisible children video. This man and his organization are
trying to stop a horrible man, Joseph Kony, in Uganda who is kidnapping, torturing and forcing
children (as young as 12) to join his army and kill others. Some of these children
have been forced to kill their own parents. These children are traumatized.
This entire campaign is Internet-driven by young 20-somethings. It has grown
and it is a testament to how "WE THE PEOPLE" can rise up and affect change.
In fact, if I'm not mistaken, this group was the impetus that caused the Obama
Administration to send the 100 Americans into Uganda to help.
This group is very organized, internet-savvy and they are making headway.
They are growing and becoming powerful. They have a huge national
event "Light up the Night" that is planned for April 20, where many volunteers
in towns/cities from all over the US--will paper Kony "wanted posters" in an
effort to make him a household name--so something will be done.
I'm not saying that he didn't do these things. It sound like he was drunk in public, but
it is incredibly suspicious--the timing of all of this.
Did something negative happen to the organization or did they have a setback in their
efforts? Did something stressful happen that caused a total breakdown?
I bet there is more to this story. Again, not saying that he didn't do these things--but
you tend to wonder about these things during this day and age--when bucking the
system and protesting loud enough to change American foreign policy--is viewed
as "out of line" by many elites in control.
I look forward to hearing the rest of the story.

(8,846 posts)First flag, Kony hasn't operated in Northern Uganda in almost 5 years.
It also seems that a majority of the charity's funds go for expenses and administration. And their main goal is fundie evangelizing.
Kony, and his LRA are indeed butchers, but the atrocities committed by the Ugandan Army seem to make them look like amateurs.

Invisible Children Funded By Antigay, Creationist Christian Right
[update: Why does it matter, if Invisible Children was funded by controversial donors? Two reasons - one, we can assume those donors thought IC aligned with their agenda - which is antagonistic to LGBT rights. Two, it fits an emerging pattern in which Invisible Children appears selectively concerned about crimes committed by Joseph Kony but indifferent to crimes, perhaps on a bigger scale, committed by their provisional partner, the government of Uganda - whose president shot his way into power using child soldiers, before Joseph Kony began using child soldiers. Like Kony, the government of Uganda was also indicted by the International Criminal Court in 2005, for human rights abuses and looting in the DRC Congo (PDF file of ICC ruling against Uganda). Like Kony, the Ugandan army preys upon civilians and is currently accused, by Western human rights groups, with raping and looting in the DRC Congo, where it is hunting for Kony. In the late 1990s, Uganda helped spark a conflict in DRC Congo that, by the middle of the next decade it is estimated, had killed up to 5.4 million civilians, more than any conflict since World War Two. See appended "Resource" section for more information. For a very different perspective on IC, Kony, and Northern Uganda, see this editorial by Milton Allimadi, of the NYC-based Blackstar news service]
What does Invisible Children share in common with the Discovery Institute, the leading organization promoting Intelligent Design, a pseudo-scientific theory created to insinuate creationist ideas into public schools or with The Call, whose leader Lou Engle claims homosexuals are possessed by demons, calls God an avenger of blood and a terrorist, and in May 2010 staged a rally in Kampala, Uganda, at which Engle warned of a gay menace to society and shared a stage with one of the authors of Ugandas notorious Anti Homosexuality Bill ?
990 IRS tax forms and yearly reports from Invisible Children, and 990s from its major donors, tell a story thats jarringly at odds with the secular, airbrushed, feelgood image the nonprofit has cultivated.
Among the tens of millions of people who have watched Invisible Childrens KONY 2012 viral video, including Oprah Winfrey a dedicated supporter of LGBT rights who also has given $2 million dollars to Invisible Children, how many were aware of ICs extensive financial ties to far-right fundamentalism, including major funders of the mounting global war on gay rights ? IC doesnt go out of its way to advertise these things.

It was actually a kid near my neck of the woods that started investigating his organization and began talking about things like the 80% "overhead" rate and Kony 2012's ties to some pretty vile evangelical or Dominionist groups.
Kony himself is one of the single vilest people on the planet and his defeat, arrest or death will only be a net plus for the species, but that doesn't mean that IC's a squeaky-clean group of paladins.

(24,411 posts)...it's typical for a twenty something to get drunk, be out partying and be walking

or even made up?
We're hearing all kind of rumor and innuendo about this organization now that we hadn't heard
until it gained some traction.
That leaves me suspicious that someone is playing dirty PR and attempting to smear this
organization.
I mean...is the story true about Kony or not? Is he kidnapping children and forcing them
to rape and kill in his sick war? If those things are true--the rest is malarky.
We all have to understand that the powerful and the elite right now--are attempting to
oppress "We The People". Any instance of the people rising up and making change will
be squashed. We must be aware that attempts could be made to disparage a grass-roots
organization that is rising up.
I will wait for more information before I make any judgement--and I certainly won't allow all
of this background noise and attacks on the organization's personalities--to diminish the evil
and sick actions of this Kony monster.

(101,348 posts)through whom to work. The LRA has been kidnapping children, raping some, forcing others to be soldiers, for years and years; but Kony himself is not thought to have been in Uganda itself for 6 years, which the Invisible Children video didn't mention, it seems (I haven't watched it through, but others say that).
Invisible Children is an evangelical organisation that spends a lot of its money on making slick videos. See, for instance, this from British TV (Charlie Brooker is a humorist who specialises in analysing media):

TMZ has footage of "Kony 2012" honcho Jason Russell in the midst of his naked meltdown in San Diego ... pounding his fists in anger and screaming maniacally.
As we previously reported, Russell was detained by police yesterday ... after witnesses say he was running around naked and making sexual gestures.
Russell was held on a 5150 psychiatric hold ... so authorities can decide if he poses a danger to himself or others.
A rep for Invisible Children says Russell was suffering from exhaustion, dehydration, and malnutrition as a result of a strenuous PR campaign.

My gripe with the group was that they wanted Obama to bring MORE TROOPs than we already have in there along with NGO's and NATO and Oil/Mineral Lobbying Foups on the "pretense of getting rid of KONY...when Kony isn't the MOST EVIL...There's MORE evil that's being done by the "Multi-Nationals" in Sub-Saharan Africa. We have a part in installing these people...because we want access to their Minerals, Oil, Gas, Water...whatever ...because our Multinational Corporations make money off it...while claiming they are "helping the indiginous people by buying up their resources.

THAT sort of thing NEVER happens.
When ever some kind of monster like Kony emerges, nobody has ever sought to turn a fast buck by exploiting a movement against him.
In all of history, this must be entirely unprecedented, especially since every religious leader is 100% trustworthy and benign.
