Michigan's first gay marriage performed in Ingham County

Michigan’s first gay marriage was performed shortly after 8 a.m. today by Ingham County Clerk Barb Byrum at the historic courthouse in Mason.

Glenna DeJong, 53, and Marsha Caspar, 52, both of Lansing, were married in the lobby after Byrum opened the clerk’s office at 8 a.m. and issued them a license.

“We’ve been waiting 27 years for this,” said DeJong.

The marriage followed a ruling late Friday by U.S. District Judge Bernard Friedman that struck down Michigan’s voter-approved ban on gay marriage as unconstitutional. Byrum, who normally opens at 8 a.m. only Monday through Friday, raced to get ahead of a stay Attorney General Bill Schuette is seeking on an emergency basis from the U.S. 6th Circuit Court of Appeals. She also got ahead of other county clerks in Michigan who announced they would open at 9 a.m. . .

There may be occasional setbacks, but the overwhelming support for it by younger Americans will make it unstoppable in the near future.
