Catholic bishops pressured Komen over Planned Parenthood
Source: Reuters
Pope Benedict's blessings marked a high point in the Komen charity's relationship with the Catholic church. But even before the papal jetliner touched down at Andrews Air Force Base near Washington in 2008, American church leaders had already begun to emerge as critics of Komen's longstanding ties to Planned Parenthood, the women's health organization whose services include birth control and abortion.
Internal Komen documents reviewed by Reuters reveal the complicated relationship between the Komen Foundation and the Catholic church, which simultaneously contributes to the breast cancer charity and receives grants from it. In recent years, Komen has allocated at least $17.6 million of the donations it receives to U.S. Catholic universities, hospitals and charities.
Church opposition reached dramatic new proportions in 2011, when the 11 bishops who represent Ohio's 2.6 million Catholics announced a statewide policy banning church and parochial school donations to Komen.
Such pressure helped sway Komen's leadership to cut funding to Planned Parenthood, according to current and former Komen officials. The decision, made public in January, and Komen's reversal only days later, sparked an angry outcry from both sides of an intensifying American debate over abortion.

(2,262 posts)Consider the recently-enacted Texas transvaginal sonogram law. Which literally forces a woman who wants a - by the way, legal - abortion - to submit to having an object put into her vagina. Some say this meets the federal definition, literally, of Rape. Sexual penetration under (quasi-legal) coercion.
I'm hoping that women's rights lawyers will get on this approach. And make sure a loud and massively publicized lawsuit/appeal hits the newspapers, about August 2012.
Ideally, we need the newspapers to be carrying stories convicting the Republican Party of rape, ideally starting in August. Or three months before the Nov. 2012 general election.
Any ladies know any interested lawyers out there?
Feel free to contact some lawyers, and get this one moving on your own. Or with friends in NARAL, Planned Parenthood, etc..

(2,262 posts)The current fixation by elements of the Church on reproductive services, is amazing and depressing; it has utterly changed the church. I listen to EWTN/RN, a para-Catholic organ. And it mentions the embryo more times than Jesus or Mary, in an average day.
In effect? Major elements of the Church have become a Cult. An anti-abortion cult. They are in the grip of a psychological fixation. That is the best way to think of it.
In spite of constant warnings from bishops and cardinals like McCarrick, Bernardin, and Ratzinger, the right wing of the Church now has a new, single, narrow obsession, a fixation, just on "one issue": abortion. Even though the Bible itself never mentioned it.
Never mind the poor and the sick. Even though the Bible emphasized these things a thousand times.
Sad and sickening, that the Church should now advance as its main pillar and demonic fixation, a monomaniacal fixation, on the embryo.
But finally, maybe we can get a handle on this. Maybe the best way to understand what is happening in the Church, is to think of it as the emergence, of a new CULT.
So that by the way? Now BOTH of our main religious candidates, are in effect, not so much Christians, as cultists: Romney, and old one-issue Santorum.

(50,365 posts)It sounds like a quid pro quo arrangement where the Catholic Church donates to the Komen Foundation and, in turn, the Komen Foundation returns the 'donation' by way of Catholic universities, etc. while both claim the donations.
It smells very bad, imo.
