McDonald’s Workers in Three States File Suits Claiming Underpayment

Source: NY Times

McDonald’s workers in California, Michigan and New York filed lawsuits this week against the company and several franchise owners, alleging that they illegally underpaid employees by erasing hours from their timecards, not paying overtime and ordering them to work off the clock.

The lawsuits were announced in a noon telephone conference by the employees’ lawyers and organizers of the union-backed movement that is pressing the nation’s fast-food restaurants to increase wages to at least $15 an hour.

In two lawsuits filed in Michigan against McDonald’s and two Detroit-area franchise owners, workers claimed that their restaurants told them to show up to work, but then ordered them to wait an hour or two without pay until enough customers showed up.

Their lawsuit also argued that the requirement by McDonald’s that employees pay for their uniforms resulted in expenses that often illegally reduced their pay below the federal minimum wage of $7.25 an hour.

How long will it be before the right wing in Congress passes a bill
legalizing slavery in America again . Capitalism works best in a
slave environment ?

2. I made $8/hour in 1996 in McD's (part time my choice)

My daughter, when she was 15 in 1999, worked at McD's part time after school and made $6/hour. She got less than me because she was underage and still in school. This was also in NY.

They expect adults to live on these wages in 2014, especially in these high COL states? Insane, but my daughter has seen jobs for teachers, with required BA's and certification, for $11/hour in NYC.

It is all about GREED. More money for the rich, and screw you. Wages are going down, down, down while the COL keeps going UP, UP, UP.

4. Those franchise owners are also cheating the government out of tax revenue.

The IRS gets very interested when employers are accused of short-pay schemes because they are also cheating on payroll taxes as well.

They just bought them an audit over peanuts in pay.

... about once a year just to remind myself why I don't eat there any more.

A couple years ago I got a Filet-o-Fish or whatever they are calling it now. The bun was literally like a piece of foam rubber.

I will never eat there again.

FWIW, McDs is reporting sales to be down year over year. I think that their prices are high for what you get and that other fast food outlets server a better product.

if I was eating like I should an egg white McMuffin. Both of those I couldn't beat for the price, but there aren't any other fast food places between home and work.
