I flew this airline some years ago, US to Kuala Lumpur, and KL to Vietnam. I was very, very impressed by the operation. It is a favorite airline of many international travelers.
Malaysia is one of the few countries that has managed to successfully integrate Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, and multiple ethnic groups into one functioning nation. I truly hope this was not an act of terrorism.

(33,982 posts)So few fatalities? It's a good aircraft. Did you see the video of what happened in the San Francisco crash? Asiana Airlines Flight 214. They flew that plane into the ground, it bounced back into the air and pirouetted, then crashed. 307 people aboard, only 3 people died.
The trip-7 has a fantastic safety record.
I'm hoping the pilots were able to put it down somewhere intact.

(15,812 posts)I remember that video - yes it did bounce. I thought maybe it was because it was newer, but it appears to have been around for awhile.
I'll keep that in mind next time I fly!

(8,646 posts)they were reporting that particular plane was involved in a runway accident that damaged the wing enough to put the plane out of service for some time. I hope it's not shoddy repairs or something.
2 Canadians were on board, and I think they mentioned 3 Americans.
CBC is being guarded with wording but they keep having 'experts' on that are basically saying, "yeah, it's probably not good at all, likely a catastrophic failure".

(8,646 posts)Not sure why they would say, "3 US citizens plus one infant." That would be 4 US citizens. Why they make the distinction, I don't know.

(18,186 posts)These updates are contradictory as is most reporting on this tragic event, but here's the latest:
UPDATE [3:03pm]: At KLIA, the brother of a passenger says relatives are being told to bring a valid passport because they need to 'travel to the crash site'. Relatives have to be at KLIA before 6pm with valid passports for MAS to make 'travel arrangements'.
Police are escorting grief-stricken relatives out of the holding room. Many are distraught and in tears.
UPDATE [2:36pm]: Malaysian Transport Minister Hishamuddin Hussein denies reports that signal from aircraft has been received in the south of Vietnam. He says the government has no information of any wreckage at the moment, but 'are looking at all possibilities'.
The Malaysian government has dispatched a plane, two helicopters and four vessels to search seas off its east coast in the South China Sea. The Philippines also sends three navy patrol boats and a surveillance plane.

(7,712 posts)BEIJING Vietnamese air force planes have spotted two large oil slicks that officials believe are from a Malaysia Airlines flight that suddenly vanished from air traffic control screens and was presumed to have crashed early Saturday, the Associated Press reports.
Search and rescue vessels and planes from Southeast Asia have been scouring the waters of the South China Sea in search of the Boeing 777 carrying 239 people, including three Americans.
A Vietnamese government statement says the slicks were spotted off the southern tip of the country and were consistent with the kinds that would be left by fuel from a crashed jet, according to AP.
I hope this isn't the aircraft, but at this point, it's looking like that plane went down with all passengers and crew members lost.
