CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago and the Detroit area stand to reap millions of dollars in federal grants and private sector investment as part of White House initiative to boost innovation in manufacturing and create jobs.

The White House says President Barack Obama will announce Tuesday the creation of two manufacturing institutes. The Detroit-area institute will focus on lightweight metals, while the Chicago hub will push innovation in digital manufacturing and design.

The institutes are being seeded by $70 million each from the Department of Defense, plus more than $70 million each from non-government sources.

usually require a highly skilled manufacturing and engineering workforce.

As long as we continue to use bombs (which we will for the foreseeable future) I'd like them to be american made bombs.

that's nice for SE Michigan in general, but I don't see it benefitting Detroit as much as it benefits Canton, a western suburb that IMO doesn't need any help. I would be much happier about this if it actually was situated in Detroit.

Canton is not Detroit. It's one of the western-most 'burbs. I remember when it was mostly farms, and I'm not even that old.

I couldn't agree more with your last sentence.

You said it very well.... That was my first & only thought as to why they would put it in an area that does NOT need any help.... Can't you just see them hiring needy people to work in Canton? Lol I agree with your opinion & I'm sure others will to....

As if. The time to bring money and jobs to Detroit was 1970.
