[R] Faulconer wins mayor's race [San Diego]

Source: San Diego Union-Tribune

SAN DIEGO — Republican City Councilman Kevin Faulconer defeated Democratic Councilman David Alvarez in the San Diego mayor’s race Tuesday night.

Faulconer had 55.2 percent compared to Alvarez’s 44.8 percent with 86 percent of the city's precincts counted.

A jubilant Faulconer gave a speech to his supporters about 10:40 p.m. but stopped short of declaring victory.

“We know that this city has gone through a lot in the last year, but we knew that as San Diegans that we were better than that and that we were going to come together when we had the opportunity to do that and come to together we have,” Faulconer said.

In my opinion, I think it is a bit premature to put this in LBN - especially since it is a local race.

It would have been better to have waited at least until after 1am PT when most of the votes have been counted.

I found that once the polls close, and the first ballots are counted,
the percentages don't change that much. Max +/-2%.
This election is over.

I don't get the people of San Diego. The city is majority Democratic,
but we keep electing Republicans. When we do elect a Democrat he turns
out to be a dirty old man.

Faulconer is going to be the Scott Walker of San Diego. The only good
part is that there are a majority dems in the city council.

-snip-

The runoff election is to fill the vacancy left by former Mayor Bob Filner’s Aug. 30 resignation stemming from a sexual harassment scandal. The winner will finish the remaining 33 months on Filner’s term and be up for re-election in 2016.

If Faulconer wins, San Diego will be the only city with a GOP Mayor among the country's 12 biggest cities.

San Diego is Issa country. The paper there (the Union-Tribune) is such a rag. We get the LA Times and way too often the paper person leaves us the SD paper instead. We live in Southwestern Riverside County almost at the San Diego border and it's so conservative. If our mortgage wasn't so cheap and my health was better, I'd be out of SoCal in a minute.

Too bad Filner was such an asshole. At least we got Mary Bono Mack out of office (finally). Issa has to go next. Smug bastard.

and the people who didn't vote RW, good luck. San Diego is pretty affluent so a vote such as this is to be expected, right?

but we'll be just fine. Unfortunately, Alvarez was not a good candidate.

Faulconer is a moderate, unlike most R's running for office, and I don't regret voting for him.

Remember Scott Brown? If he had had to run in a general election, he'd still be driving his truck around Wrentham instead of looking to move to New Hampshire and run there.
