US Snowboarder Wins 1st Gold of Sochi Olympics
Source: ABC News
Sage Kotsenburg loves snowboarding for all its unexpected surprises. Winning the Olympic gold medal, for one. And winning it with a trick so outrageous, he named it the "Holy Crail."
The 20-year-old American jetted off the first big jump of the slopestyle course Saturday and propelled himself into a helicopter twirl that whirred around for four-and-a-half rotations. While in the air, he grabbed the back of his board and flexed his legs behind his back.
Kotsenburg landed the jump cleanly. The fans in the mostly full stands, knowing they had seen something completely new in a completely new Olympic sport, let out a huge gasp.
On the strength of a trick that will officially go down as a "1620 Japan Air Mute Grab," the kid from Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, and known as "Second Run Sage" posted a winning score of 93.5 on his first run.

(11,344 posts)I am already sick of the Olympics on so many levels, from the bullshit corporate sponsors to the monumentally stupid homophobia to the Pax Americana feel of it all.

going to do a 1620 in my run until three minutes before I dropped. It's kind of what I'm all about."

(22,651 posts)would love to see more 'Olympic quality sports' added to the games.
A lot in the canine world like Schutzhund ,fly ball, advanced tracking/obedience and advanced agility that are Olympic quality sports. Equine world too.

(3,077 posts)... while it is great that Sage won, I had watched early Friday morning and the Canadians had him beat.
BTW, snowboarders is one of the main reasons why I have not returned to the ski slopes/resorts/

(27,787 posts)Some on DU might not want to find out the outcomes when they're just reading through the DU topic titles.
Usually folks indicate that the result is inside their OP so folks can avoid finding out if they want.

(27,787 posts)Or, continue to feel free to spoil the outcome of Olympic events for folks who do care.
Doesn't really matter to me, but it will for some folks on DU.

(22,651 posts)We Americans can't even surf to one of the more progressive 'free' countries and watch their videos and live stream.

(4,856 posts)They have 8 separate stations showing the olympics, not just one with exclusive rights that shows commercials and not much sport like MSNBC in the US. You too can watch it if you sign up at ETVnet.com (Canada based). The whole package is $7 for an entire month. Then just cut it off. Ironic that the land of the free has it on one channel and Russian TV has it on eight.

Sad to say, the announcers were COMPLETELY clueless to the fact that something unprecedented had happened -- they were too busy whining about Sage's hands scraping the ground. X-Games announcers would have been squealing like teenyboppers (not to mention describing each of his jumps). But shoddiness seems to be the overall theme of this particular Olympiad.
You're welcome.
