5-year-old actress gets death threats over her Disney show’s gay characters
Source: RawStory.com
Police are investigating death threats made against 5-year-old actress Mia Talerico after her Disney Channel program introduced a lesbian couple, the Daily Dot reported on Thursday.
Talericos show, Good Luck Charlie, introduced the two characters, Susan and Cheryl, in an episode aired on Jan. 26. Talericos real-life mother, Claire, notified Disney security after someone began posting messages on the actress Instagram account saying, Die Mia, F*cking Die in hell! Kill yourself, you deserve to die.
CNN reported that Disney then alerted Los Angeles police officials, who are investigating the posts.
The Dot also reported that the one-time appearance of Susan and Cheryl (played by Desi Lydic and Lilli Birdsell, respectively) also spurred an unsuccessful protest by the conservative group One Million Moms, which accused Disney of wanting to corrupt its channel by featuring gay characters, however briefly.

(3,557 posts)How much creative input do they think the 5-year-old actress has in the show? Do they honestly believe the 5-year-old came up with the idea to include a gay couple as a way to somehow stir controversy or to illustrate the concept of inclusion in our society?
As the father of a 5-year-old girl, I know my daughter doesn't have a clue about what gay or straight means let alone understand how or why it could be controversial.
The person who threatened her is a very sick individual that needs some psychological help.

Who taught all of these hateful people to hate same sex couples ?
Science does not teach hate.
Religion teaches hate and intolerance.

(50,254 posts)The Soviet Union and states modeled on it were hotbeds of religious and ethnic prejudice, and homophobia and bigotry against the disabled(there were to be no "imperfect" people in the land of the "New Man" .
Hatred must be fought, and the world's religions(particularly Christianity-and I say that as someone who is still more-or-less Christian)have a lot of misery and blood on their hands. But while that is true, it also isn't that simple. There is something within us, at some level, that seems to feel a NEED to hate, a need to fear, and a need to stigmatize all who don't fit some arbitrary standard of "normal". And the place that this toxic need comes from is a very deep and powerful place...because tyrant after tyrant has taken power, all over the word, by finding some group of people for other people to feel justified in hating.
To wipe out hate, we have to find what it is in ourselves that values hate, and find the way to neutralize it.
So yes, call out religion and the religious when they do damage, when they cause misery, when they cause pain and even death...but don't assume that simply getting rid of religion would make hatred vanish.
There is much more to it than that.
And I'm horribly sorry for all of the way religion and supposedly religious people have done damage in this world, because it is pretty clear from your posts that you and those you care about have been the victims of that.

(4,473 posts)I have noticed something of a double standard on DU. Saying truly vile things about religion seems to be acceptable. If someone were to make similar statements about African-Americans, Jews, or just about any other group, such a person would almost certainly be ruthlessly stomped on.

(15,189 posts)Their skin color, sexual orientation, or gender. Religion IS a choice. And to compare those aspects to religion is just silly. You can "choose" to leave a church. Hell, some don't even leave when priests molest young boys.
Fortinbras Armstrong
(4,473 posts)I am speaking of attacks on religion itself. I am a Catholic. I have no problem differentiating between the Catholic faith and the Catholic Church, which are two completely different things. I have, in fact, posted repeatedly on some of what I see wrong with the Catholic Church, for example, at http://www.democraticunderground.com/1221591 (note: I wrote that during the papacy of Benedict XVI, who was then "the current Pope", with "the previous Pope" being John Paul II).
SamKnause's post #35 was attacking the faith, not the Church. "Religion poison's EVERYTHNG" is, as I said, a vile attack on religion, and such attacks are apparently quite acceptable on DU.
EvilAL
(1,437 posts)that religion is a thing. The jury should have went 6-0 to leave it. Saying Religion is poison, or poisons everything isn't insulting the followers of the religion, maybe one might be offended by it, but as far as I am concerned it wouldn't offend me if that is someone's opinion of a group or institution. everytime someone gets on about guns or PETA you have people getting offended, but it's not an attack on the people. Had the poster said that 'the religious poison everything', or 'Catholics poison everything' I may agree with you. In the end it is still a choice and if you choose to belong to a group that gets crapped on sometimes, like say RKBA proponents, you have the right to defend it or ignore the poster. You also have the right to alert on the post, but don't be surprised when it is allowed to stay.
Fortinbras Armstrong
(4,473 posts)Could it be that you agree with it?
EvilAL
(1,437 posts)I have no problem with people talking shit about any organization, even an organization I am part of. The only recourse is crying persecution or bigotry, both of which would be a real stretch for the post you alerted on. I have been accused of being a bigot for saying bad stuff about a book. A BOOK. You can probably guess which book. Had it been a stephen king book nobody would have said shit.
Fortinbras Armstrong
(4,473 posts)If you say that it is a stretch to say "Religion teaches hate and intolerance. Religion poisons EVERYTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" is bigoted.
Then apparently, you place the bar for bigotry quite high.
EvilAL
(1,437 posts)There is no bar. I can't be bigoted against an idea. I can say that this idea is bad or good, or wrong or whatever and it isn't bigoted. Religion holds no special significance. Downhill Skiing poisons everything!! Am I bigoted against downhill skiiers or people that are fans of downhill skiing? or both? If they invent Uphill skiing and it ruins the sport of skiing, would I be a bigot if I said Uphill skiing poisons everything?
Fortinbras Armstrong
(4,473 posts)I was going to say that you don't want to admit to your bigotry, but that would undoubtedly get me a slap on the wrist. (Of course, when I am called a "drooling mouthed, bigoted moron" -- see http://www.democraticunderground.com/121899547#post79 , that was considered quite acceptable. But then, there is a clear double standard -- the tender feelings of atheists are to be deferred to, but insults from them are OK)
Anyway, my previous comment stands: If you say " "Religion teaches hate and intolerance. Religion poisons EVERYTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" is not bigoted, then you set the bar for bigotry extremely high.
EvilAL
(1,437 posts)What you want to me, i really don't care. I don't alert on anything, but maybe someone else would have. If i had been on the jury for that post about you i would have voted to hide. I can say pretty much whatever i want about religion and it's not bigotry. We've been over this a million times on DU. Nobody ever says bad things about atheism on DU.. LOL
Fortinbras Armstrong
(4,473 posts)Exactly. Atheists can spout the most bigoted things, and that's just peach-keen dandy. Let a believer say, "That's bigotry." and said believer will be stomped on -- and you would help in the stomping.
Thank you for admitting you support a double standard.
EvilAL
(1,437 posts)You can say whatever you want about any religion and how it's stupid or mythological. Fuck the pope. Zeus is an asshole. Horus had sex with sheep. Being offended doesn't make the offender a bigot. It's just too bad that in our time, when people are realizing religion for what it is and was meant to be, that people are still arguing over it, it should be embraced and we can move on. At least we are able to argue about it without getting burned or stoned for it, as per god's instructions in that book. Well, some people still do in other places.
As for the double standard, if you think atheists are running shit around here, well, heh, I don't know what to say about that. I don't think I've ever stomped on anyone here about their beliefs or lack of belief. If I had I would have been slammed for it and would remember.
Fortinbras Armstrong
(4,473 posts)Not necessarily. But spouting bigotry does. And "Religion poisons EVERYTHING" is bigotry, whether you want to admit it or not.

Congratulations, you have not done so. Others have. I gave a specific example where I was called a "drooling mouthed, bigoted moron" and that was acceptable, yet I called an atheist a nebbish (because he had called me a liar -- and was not taken to task for it -- and after I proved, by direct sourced quotation, that I told the truth, he literally laughed it off) I was slapped down. Double standard.

(1,245 posts)He's telling the kid to kill herself, hoping she dies, etc ... which is absolutely and obviously deplorable ... but it's technically not a 'death threat'. That would involve saying that he's (or others acting on his behalf are) going to actually do the deed. I'd say it's rather carefully worded by someone who knows how to make a threat to someone else ... whilst avoiding an assault charge.

It is indeed a sad world sometimes... The kid is just 5 years old - and got her first death treath... I wonder what is next on their "agenda" .... To threaten to kill a 5 year old, over something like this, is just, in my humble opinion pure evil - and stupid as few... But then again - people who hate, are not the most reasonable peoples in the world either...
