Christie's National Poll Numbers Plummet

TOM KLUDT – JANUARY 28, 2014, 6:43 AM EST

Americans have taken a decidedly more negative view toward Chris Christie, according to a poll out Tuesday, a sign that the New Jersey governor's once-solid national profile has been damaged by the scandals surrounding his administration.

To be sure, the latest NBC/Wall Street Journal poll showed that there are still plenty of Americans who don't have an opinion of Christie. But among those who do, the Republican governor's individual rating has taken a dip.

Only 22 percent said they have a positive view of Christie, down 11 points from the NBC/WSJ poll in October. Moreover, his negative rating has climbed from 17 percent in October to 29 percent in the latest survey.

The reversal to Christie's standing dovetails with a rise in public skepticism toward his denials that he ordered or knew about the lane closures on the George Washington Bridge last summer. Forty-four percent now say that Christie is not telling the truth, while 42 percent say they buy his story. An NBC/WSJ poll earlier this month showed that 44 percent believed Christie, compared with only 33 percent who didn't think he was telling the truth.

Chris Christie update: New polls spell trouble

Your daily recap of the latest developments from New Jersey

ELIAS ISQUITH

Here’s what you need to know about what’s going on in Christieland:

A new NBC/Wall Street Journal poll finds Christie’s favorability rating continues to drop. Just as worrisome for the Republican governor, the poll also finds most voters — 44 percent — believe Christie is not telling the whole truth about “Bridgegate” (42 percent believe Christie’s being truthful). These figures aren’t a death knell for Christie’s potential 2016 campaign, but as Republican pollster Bill McInturff puts it, the poll “changes the starting point of a national campaign.”

Another new poll, this one from Fairleigh Dickinson and PublicMind, shows 53 percent of New Jersey respondents doubt Christie’s assertion that he didn’t know anything about Bridgegate in advance.

According to a report from the Washington Post, Christie will be hitting the road soon to raise money for the Republican Governors Association, which he chairs. The embattled governor will travel to Texas, Illinois, Georgia, Utah, Connecticut and Massachusetts. Christie aides are trying to spin the trip as proof of Christie’s resilience.

Some rare good news for Christie: He beat a 13-year-old in a game of ping pong on Monday.

UPDATE:

Christie Plays 13-Year-Old In Ping Pong, Warns Of 'Ramifications' If He Loses

TOM KLUDT – JANUARY 28, 2014, 11:26 AM EST

You're a 13-year-old kid playing a round of ping-pong against a politician accused of exacting retribution against people who don't give him what he wants. What do you do?

Ivan Fradkin faced such a proposition Monday at a Newark, N.J. Boys & Girls Club when he squared off against Chris Christie in a game of table tennis. The youngster got the better of the governor at the outset.

"You're kicking my butt, man," Christie conceded before joking that "there could be ramifications" for Fradkin. But that was before the two started keeping score. After deciding to play Fradkin to three points, Christie emerged with a close victory.

"That's it, brother," Christie said.

ROFL!!!!!

The bigger they are... and all that.

Unfortunately there's nothing to celebrate yet. And I hesitate to start until this one's been played all the way out to the kind of conclusion we're hoping for, and that frankly, this smug bully deserves.

Y'know - it's ALWAYS come up a little short. I remember feeling incomplete while watching Watergate play out. Yep, nixon had to resign or face the impeachment he deserved. So he avoided the worst of it. Lots of "mistakes were made" weasel words. Back then it was "unindicted co-conspirator", a term that, at the time, I'd never heard before. And nixon survived to semi-rehabilitate himself and write books and do the David Frost interview and such, as an "elder statesman." He never served time, except maybe in self-imposed exile at his beautiful home overlooking the ocean in San Clemente with the fetching young Diane Sawyer at his elbow to be his personal scribe or secretary or errand-runner or some such thing. She was a White House aide at the time, and went with him in that helicopter that lifted off from the White House to take him outta there for the last time. He never served time. He never even saw the inside of a courtroom.

Same thing with fucking reagan and Iran/Contra. Only much later did the truth come out about how close he came to being impeached, and what herculean maneuvers by his apologists and handlers and trusty wife Nancy, to keep him out of trouble and maintain that "squeaky-clean" "legacy." That SOB never paid for that one. Never had to pay. Shit - he never even had to consider resigning.

And of course, then there's bush/cheney. Got off scott-free.

I observed one thing that seemed really key: those republi-CONS sure do stick together. WAY more disciplined. And yeah, WAY more Machiavellian. I don't remember any wholesale dumping on any of these guys by any in their inner circles - the way it happened to Bill Clinton during the whole Monica mess. MAN, Dee Dee Myers and George Stephanopolous were way out front, stomping their little feet and huffing and puffing and throwing their little hissy fits and flinging poo at him in public. It was all see-how-they-run. MORE than happy to go on all the Sunday talk shows and news shows at the time (not much cable except for CNN and Pox Noise was just getting started) to denounce him openly and carry on about how terribly horrible it was - and, especially, how terribly horrible he was. Political lice. NOBODY circled the wagons. Nobody closed ranks and went on offense. They all ran off and joined the Cat-Call Club. All of a sudden you saw this Lanny Davis dude whom nobody'd ever seen or heard of before, hauled out from the minor leagues to go on camera all over the place and present the lone voice in Clinton's defense. Schmucks. LOTS of 'em deserted him. The other side, on the other hand, stayed close and protected their quarterback and always shot outward rather than inward. Enviable. It's too bad, really. A whole lot of the real weasels are OURS.

And because the Democrats have refused to prosecute crimes of the Republicans, for example Carter refusing to finish the job with Nixon, Clinton closing the book on Iran/Contra, and Obama not acknowledging the Bush criminal enterprise, is exactly why are country is in the condition it is today. We are living with 50 years of unrestrained , unchallenged, dangerous Republican Criminality.

Glad you're here! And you're spot-on. republi-CON Criminality. Absolutely! I don't know why our side doesn't prosecute! Especially bush/cheney. They're WAR CRIMINALS forcryingoutlout!!! Nancy Pelosi was very firm - "impeachment is off the table." WHY???? Why did she do that? Did she think if we don't give 'em hell then they'll be nice to us? Is she CRAZY????? They'll be shitty to us regardless whether we're "nice" to them or not. So I say Fuck 'em! Fuck 'em in the heart - if they had one.

I just don't get it about our side. WTF? They let the bad guys walk every time!!!! Why can't we go for the jugular? What do we win by NOT doing so? I think what we win is the Doormat of the Year award. Every year so far.

They just don't seem to get - or maybe just don't want to get - that these are scorpions. Don't listen to them when they say they'll play along or they won't sting or they won't bite or they'll be good. That's what Harry Reid naively did with mitch mcconnell and SHEESH, mcconnell shook his hand and then stuck a knife in his back. How many more times are we gonna trust 'em and get screwed? I sure wish our side would learn something from this!

and I share your frustration. It's hard to not be jaded or cynical.

As for Humpty Christie, if at least his presidential aspirations are derailed, that will be one positive outcome to this scandal's coming to light.

Christie on a tour of a renovated Boys & Girls Club challenged a 13-year-old to a game of table tennis.

The governor won.

Someone ended up dead in a hotel in GA over an audit and the skimming being done. Then there was his refusal to build the train the voters of the entire state wanted...

If anyone tenaciously dug into Jeb's history in FL, they would find the corruption just like Christie has... However, unlike Christie, the Bush's have a deep CIA connection and people will disappear for real!

Oh, and remember the DC Madam? She was found "suicided" in FL, as well.
