Christie's popularity in wake of bridge scandal plummets in N.J., poll shows

Source: Star-Ledger

TRENTON — Gov. Chris Christie's popularity among New Jersey voters has plummeted in the wake of the George Washington Bridge scandal — especially among Democrats, according to a new poll.

The Rutgers-Eagleton poll, released today, shows 46 percent of voters view the Republican governor favorably, while 43 percent have an unfavorable view two weeks after e-mails surfaced that appear to link a Christie staff member to the bridge controversy.

That's a 19-point drop from the group's last survey, in November, when 65 percent of voters saw Christie favorably just before he was re-elected in a landslide.

The poll also shows Democrats are abandoning their support of Christie, who repeatedly touted a message of bipartisanship on the campaign trail last year and bolstered his re-election bid with the endorsements of more than 60 Democratic officials. While 45 percent of Democratic voters viewed him favorably in November's poll, that number fell to 19 percent in today's survey — a 26-point decline.

Two-thirds of the polling was done before Hoboken Mayor Dawn Zimmer went public with her charges against the Christie administration.

The poll shows that Christie would lose to Hillary Clinton by 21% in a presidential matchup, if the election were held today.

He still has a lot of support among NJ's Republicans -- 78% favorability, with an 83% job rating (among Democrats, his job rating has fallen from 51 to 29%).

The poll also shows that a majority of NJ residents don't believe Christie's claim that his advisors acted without his knowledge when they caused the GWB traffric jam.

"You can't fool all the people all the time."

Especially not when you're nothing but a vengeful thug, depending on billionaires' bucks to buy you the White House.

It's sad how self serving 1%ers are so able to bullshit their way into office with that happy talk that lulls voters to sleep.

you?" Or, "Let's see how this thing plays out in the next couple of months." Hard to believe huge donor money was actually pledged, especially after their losses last election.

It also makes Hillary (or other Democrat) almost a shoe-in and could provide, coincidentally, for challengers to Hillary given the paltry stable of Republicans after Christie. One could hope for a Progressive willing to jump in the race.

NO COMPLACENCY !!!!! The Kochs and all the other 1 percenters will be spending huge amounts of money, which will definitely have an impact. Look at how their money managed to get the village idiot from Texas into the White House against genuinely good competition.

think he'd be asked to step down as Chairman of the RGA, but today I'm not so sure. If some key people are given immunity, he may not even finish his term as Governor, and even if he does, he'll certainly be in a much more weakened state.

now that the voters know that his definition of moderation is "my way or the highway," and his that definition of bipartisanship is "my way or I'll CLOSE your highway." Maybe sixty more subpoenas should go out to the Dems who endorsed "Governor Soprano" so we can find out if THEY were shaken down, too.
