Hoboken Mayor Defends Sandy Aid Claims: 'I Stand By My Word'

Last edited Sun Jan 19, 2014, 10:50 PM - Edit history (5)

Hoboken, N.J. Mayor Dawn Zimmer on Sunday defended her claims that the New Jersey governor's office tied Sandy relief aid to a real estate project in Hoboken backed by Gov. Chris Christie (R).

"I stand by my word," she said on CNN's "State of the Union." "They were holding our Sandy funds hostage."

Zimmer on Saturday said that Lieutentant Gov. Kim Guadagno told Zimmer that her town would receive a large sum of Sandy relief aid if the mayor pushed for the quick approval of a real estate project important to the governor.

(snip)
"They're playing games with the numbers, and that's a deflection," Zimmer said Sunday about Christie's office. "They are hiding behind spokespeople."

NJ mayor: Sandy aid ultimatum came from Christie
The Democratic mayor of a town severely flooded by Superstorm Sandy said Sunday that she was told an ultimatum tying recovery funds to her support for a prime real estate project came directly from Republican Gov. Chris Christie, a claim a Christie spokesman called "categorically false."

Hoboken Mayor Dawn Zimmer said she met with federal prosecutors in Newark for several hours Sunday at their request and turned over a journal and other documents.

"I will provide any requested information and testify under oath about the facts of what happened when the Lieutenant Governor came to Hoboken and told me that Sandy aid would be contingent on moving forward with a private development project," she said in a statement Sunday night.

This interview couldn't have been more of a hatchet job if the host had used an actual hatchet. How many times (four or five) did she ask the mayor about the same fucking little ass-kiss comment in which she had praised Christie? Anyone in politics knows that if you have a governor in your state who is as big a bitch as Christie, you had better say a few nice things about him, no matter how disingenuous.

CNN has been bought-off by the same people who own Chris Christie, or I miss my guess.

Your answer, though personally embarrassing for Zimmer, is the truth. As bad as things were, she didn't want them to get worse.

We don't know everything he has done to those who crossed him, especially those who were failing to cooperate to the degree that Mayor Zimmer did. That was not just an urban redevelopment proposed for Hoboken, it was tens of millions of dollars that would go into the pockets of Christie's friends in the construction and transport businesses ("Waste Management" would be in for a nice cut too).

The mayor was only trying to survive by stroking the Governor's ego in August. She had no chance to win a complaint against him then, she knew it would only have been career suicide.

And is willing to testify UNDER OATH of what she was told by NJ's Lt. Governor on the Rockfeller development. Mayor Zimmer needs nothing else or to "impress" the folks at CNN. The truth is what she has stated over and over again --- The Lt. Governor on orders of the Governor threaten to deny Hoboken Sandy relief funding if she did not support the Rockfeller Development.

So, what else does Mayor Zimmer need to do? Run on every cable "news" show with the statement from her diary glued onto her head?

Plus, this "winner gets 'the spoils'" excuse simply says that corruption is a given so get over it. What planet does Crowley live on? It is also the same tact taken by another critic of this story as he said no wrongdoing was exposed, only that it shows the role "juice" plays in getting things done. In other words, to these people there are no boundaries that stand in the way of the powerful doing whatever they damn please. They have the juice to grab the spoils. No wonder the income gap has grown to obnoxious levels.

Correction: Mayor Zimmer has said she is willing to take a lie detector test, not that she had already taken one.

She brought up several times that she had praised the Christie administration. Then she tried to discount her claim that Hoboken had been denied funds. Crowley didn't have her facts right trying to claim that the city had received a large portion of the available funds when all but about 350,000 had been insurance claims. Candy is a miserable hack at best.
